I think our defensive personnel fit the 4-3 better than the 3-4.

3-4 it is guys otherwise we will see our defense regress.

Our D could possibly regress but it wouldn't be because we ran a 4-3.

Well with James @ MLB, Ware being 1-dimensional, missing another DE (NO proof Ellis is gonna be healthy), and 3-4 DEs playing 4-3 DTs... signs point to a disaster waiting to happen.

We've got LBs on the team already. Going to a 4-3 means we need one LESS LB, not one MORE LB.

Burnett, Carp, Ayodele would likely be the starters in a 4-3.

I agree Rack. It's a DT rotation I think we would need to find if we ran a 43. I think we could be OK at DE, assuming Ellis came back. We would also need to find a FS but we pretty much need that either way. People talk as if it's crazy hard to go from a 34 to a 43 but IMO, it's harder to go the other way. When you first start playing Pop Warner, you normally start in a 43. You play 43 most of your career. It's not like it would be strange to anybody IMO. Maybe I'm nieve but I don't see it as that big an issue myself.

I doubt James would be the Mike. I'd expect that would probably end up being Carpenter or Ayodele. I also don't think Ware is one dimensional. Players play and if Ware is lined up at DE, he's going to make plays there. Even if Ellis doesn't come back, you probably have a DE rotation of Ware, Hatcher, Canty and Ratliff or Coleman. At DT you probably have Fergy, Spears, Stanley, Bowen, and either Ratliff or Coleman again. I just don't see this as being such a big stretch deal personel wise. We would need to add a bigger DT IMO but we would need to do that anyway.

1. James wouldn't the MLB if I was the DC.

2. You look at it as Ware being 1 dimensional. I look at is as Ware's coverage ability adding a whole new dimension to the defense. Being able to run zone blitzes and not lose anything in coverage.

3. We aren't missing a DE. Ware, Ellis, Canty, and Hatcher are all we need.

4. Ratliff and Spears could be a nice rotation at the 3 technique spot. My only concern about the DL if we go to a 4-3 would be the backup NG (but then again, that's a concern if we stay in the 3-4 as well).

1. I wish you were up for the job then... honestly, you get my vote.

2. IF we can use Ware like the Fins do with Taylor then that would be great. I just dont want him to be the typical 4-3 DE.

3. Ellis is a big ? as of now. Canty and Hatcher arent really proven yet, not saying they cant do it, just we honestly dont know if they can yet.

4. We needed to address DT anyway so I see where you going here.

Agreed. As it stands now, in a 4-3, Ware's pretty much all we've got as a pass rusher. Not that that was different than our late-season 3-4, but still...

To run the 4-3 we need serious help along the Dline and at MLB - or we need people to step up large.

We did add Stanley back late in the season and the comments were he was a much better player now then when we had him. He came from JAX who run a 4-3 too, so he may be that answer behind Fergy.

I find the Ware as one dimensional as laughable as him being too small, I've been saying zone blitz ever since Parcells left.

We are just as close to a good 4-3 as we are a good 3-4 right now, what we need is coaching with some balls to turn them loose.

This is the answer I was talking about.

I think Ayodele or Carpenter could play MLB in a 43. James scrapes better then he covers IMO but to me, I could see Carpenter as the Sam, Ayodele as the Mike and Burnett or Singleton as the Will. James could be depth at MLB if he can't prove that he has the foot speed to play sideline to sideline and Fowler and Glymph are depth inside and outside respectively.

Its a big question mark whether Carp will make a quick transition to MLB from OLB. He didn't even make the active roster the first few weeks trying to play ILB this past season. He had a tendency to take false steps that left him out of position and easily blocked in his early playing time at ILB and even at OLB.

I disagree on James. Sometimes he's ok at scraping, but he doesn't have the speed to get all the way to the sideline against faster RB's. I've even notice him lose track of the ball carrier many times when he's scraping down the line. Not to mention his coverage issues. If we're looking at running a Tampa 2 like Chicago did.. there's NO WAY we can expect Bradie James to cover the deep middle of the field like they had Urlacher do.

Fowler seems to have great instincts for finding the ball (see the Rams game 05 and how he was always in there on goalline defense in 06). I just wonder if he's good enough to be a starting MLB. BTW, Fowler was playing ILB when the Saints abused us with Mike Karney on several plays there... I believe he might have missed his coverage assignment.

And in the 3-4 we need the DL to step up and be more disruptive.

We need an inside presense that can draw attention away from Ware.

The way I see it we have the same issues with either scheme...another pass rusher, better DL play, and someone better than James inside.

What evidence would you have to support a 3-4 as superior to a 4-3?
None. It's an opinion based on the performance of teams that currently run a 3-4 defense compared to those teams that run a 3-4.

That's exactly where your previous comment of:

what we need is coaching with some balls to turn them loose.

is EXACTLY what we need.

I may be completely wrong but I believe the coaching held our DLinemen back more than anything that is wrong with their talent and ability to play the 3-4.

True. I don't see the need to make a total switch, though, and mix players up when you could stay in the scheme, and address the problems you have there. James has shown he can play 3-4 ILB, even though he stunk last year. I think changing the scheme (again) just compounds the problems that already exist.
