Lions to ask NFL to review unnecessary roughness penalty for tackle on Elliott

It's pretty clear he intentionally lifts him up and slams him down. When he first wraps him up all he has to do is drop his body weight, but instead he attempts and executes a body slam. That is by definition a penalty.

Well put. "Intent".

I wonder what the lions hope to gain by appealing it?
It looked like a penalty real time, and ref didnt watch the replays.
It wasnt a slam, kinda weird, but still I see why they called it, since the guy had a attitude with elliot.

I thought it was going to be a flag real-time when it happened. Though I will say that Elliott's leg coming down first took some of the impact out of the body slam.

Either way, it's academic. On a side note, I don't think I've ever seen a whinier bunch of ref-blaming fans that Detroit Lions fans. Collectively, they're pathetic.
Well they, their fans, and many pundits thought that Detroit and Matt Stafford were going to walk outta AT&T Stadium with a win. The Lions were the next test that Dallas was going to struggle with and eventually fall to.

Exactly... Review it all you want.. You can't lift a guy up off the ground like that, hold them up, and then slam them.

It was like the announcers had never seen this rule before or something.
If you're strong enough to pick them up and body slam them, then you're strong enough to just hold them as a tackle stop their momentum until the whistle is blown. The slam was unnecessary.

Bull ....... the play was over and he picked Zeke up and slammed him to the ground ........ that is the definition of UNNECESSARY roughness.

Not saying it wasn't a penalty, but how was the play over? In the span of half a second this guy grabbed Zeke, the refs blew the play dead, and then there was still time to pick him up and slam him?

I believe the flag was for a culmination of things.

He spent the first half in Zekes face after getting up from piles.

He was talked to about it the last time I noticed it

And even though the slam wasn't vicious the intent was obviously there.

Definitely deserved a flag.

Agree. Glad you saw that " in your face" which was shown previously.... To me a well deserved penalty, as Zeke used his leg to break the fall, and could have been seriously hurt doing so...

I didn't think it should've been flagged. He picked him up but he didn't slam him at all.
I didn't really think it required a penalty. He did pick him up but seemed to back off on slamming him down.

I would have been irritated if the Cowboy got penalized for that move.

I guess it's possible that the particular defensive player had been pushing the limit on the rules previously and the refs just decided to put a stop to it, but I don't know that for a fact.

It goes back to 2014 and the face guarding by Hitchens. But, yeah, they alternately think they have a better team than they do, blaming the refs for all their losses, and fall apart at the first sign of difficulty and want to lose out, referring to themselves as the LOLions.

Though, in fairness to them, playing in a division with GB probably would condition you to questioning refereeing a fair bit.

It's that curse of Bobby Layne that's still kicking after all these years. It was suppose to expire but apparently it still has a shelf life longer than we expected. Either that or the curse of the Fords lol

It was a terrible call, it's called a tackle

No it's wasn't. It's just like the horse collar. Certain ways of tackling are against the rules based on player safety and lifting a player off the ground and body slamming him is one of those banned techniques. You should familiarize yourself with the rules. It's not hard to do really. All you have to do is pay attention as you watch the games.

He didn't back off a bit. He attempted to slam him as hard as he could. He just didn't execute the ending like he intended and Zeke was able to get a foot down to help brace himself. It also helped him land more on the defender than the ground. The penalty is not dependent on the outcome. The penalty is the act of body slamming a defenseless player that you have lifted off the ground. You see roughing penalties all the time that don't result in injury. It doesn't matter one bit how hard Zeke actually hits the ground. Once he lifts him up and attempts to slam him, it's a penalty. The play is deemed over once a defender lifts the player off his feets and is holding him up. All defenders know this and know they are not allowed to them slam him to the ground.

So some of you don't think that the Lions would be crying to NFL right now if Irving had done that to Zenner and got a no-call?.....

I'm very familiar with the rules, it was not an illegal tackle, he was not body slammed, it was a piss pour call

It absolutely is a penalty. You cannot pick a player up as far as you can and slam him to the ground. It doesn't matter how hard he hits the ground. The very act of doing it is a penalty. The league has determined that once you have the ball carrier picked up in the air, the play is over because his momentum has been stopped. The act of then slamming him to the ground is unnecessary roughness after the play is over. If that wasn't the rule, you would see defenders doing that numerous times a game.

Yup, that was a good call by the official. The announcers were annoying to piss and moan about it. They had their heads up their butts.
