That's a great list altogether. Ribisi is one of my favorites though. I remember him in the Wonder Years.

Two more that's been missed IMO is

John Cusack and his sister Joan, I think both are very gifted and don't get near the credit they should for their acting...

I completely disagree. Great movies and performances.
I'll take Forrest Gump over Philadelphia, but to me, neither of those films, nor the acting in them, is anything special. I did enjoy the music in Forrest Gump though.

He is a good actor but I think he pretty much gets the credit/attention he deserves. So I don't really see him as underrated.

Regardless of where they are rated....Nick Cage, Tom Cruise, Mark Whalberg, and Keanu Reeves are AWFUL actors IMO.

Not saying they aren't in some good movies...because each one has been in a few....just saying that overall, their acting is atrocious.

Raising Arizona comes to mind. :laugh2:

Nicholas Cage is a great CHARACTER actor, but he stinks as a lead...

Overrated:
Julia Roberts
Jack Nicholson (I LOVE his movies, but he's the same character in every one)
Ben Affleck
Alec Baldwin
Matt Damon
Robin Williams (except when he plays a deranged role)
Samuel L. Jackson (still like his movies)
Matthew McConaughey
Heath Ledger
George Clooney
Jennifer Lopez

Underrated:
Jeff Bridges
Paul Giamatti
Harry Dean Stanton
Kevin Bacon
William H. Macy
Joan Allen
Dennis Leary
John Cusack
Ed Norton
John C. McGinley

Several I left off both lists I'm sure...

A lot of these underrated lists remind me of one of my favorite movies.

Miller's Crossing.

It has Steve Buschemi, John Turturro, and Gabriel Byrne, who I also like a lot.

I guess it goes back to what people consider overrated, but how would you figure these guys are overrated? I'd take Slater as the best actor of those three, but none of them are held in high esteem or get a lot of pub. So, I'm just wondering what your criteria is.

Yep, i forgot about him too. He was hilarious in Usual Suspects.

He was also excellent in '21 Grams', a great movie by the way.

Overrated:

George Clooney
Brad Pitt
Tom Hanks

Underrated:

Steve Buscemi (my favourite actor, check out Trees Lounge)
David Thewliss (you might recognize him from Harry Potter, but you must see him in Naked)
John Turturro (Do The Right Thing and Barton Fink immediately come to mind.)
David Strathairn (Brilliant in Good Night and Good Luck, also excellent in Limbo)

However, it really depends how we define over/underrated, because guys like Turturro and Buscemi are certainly held in the highest regard among cinema buffs, but they tend not to play the stereotypical leading Hollywood roles (although Buscemi has provided amusing supporting turns in otherwise forgettable Hollywood fare, such as The Rock and The Wedding Singer.)

Good call on those too. But I got to disagree with Strathairn

Edit: sorry for some reason i thought you were talking about Jason Statham. oops. But yes, he, Strathairn, is a good actor.

I need to add Richard Gear and Harrison Ford on my overrated list. Both had a couple of good performances but overall they are the same person in every single movie.

I gotta throw another guy in there who I think is very underrated. Neil Patrick Harris.... aka Doogie Howser. He was typecast as that little kid doctor genius, but in How I Met Your Mother he's great, and he's getting roles in movies now (Harold & Kumar). I think he's hilarious.

.

Is he even acting any more? Just seems as if he is being himself in his movie roles and not playing a character.

The same goes for Nick Nolte. I swear they just turn on the cameras and let Nick just be Nick. No scripts and let's see how it turns out.
