Pete Rozelle is rolling in his grave
Not at all. Rozelle much like Tex worked together promoting and protecting the iconic label.

Goodell and even our owner who I take on at every opportunity if he’s done nothing else has promoted and protected the iconic labels taking it to new levels despite whatever criticism we might have on the game itself and how it’s evolved .

This era has had issues this league has never encountered in Rozelle era with multi billion dollar lawsuits with CTE which new rules were implemented to combat .

We’ve had the Personal Conduct Policy which took on the growing issues we had with players domestic abuse . And the more recent issues with patriotism and players social stands .

This leadership in commissioners office will go down in history as the greatest surpassing Rozelle era despite the criticism of fans . The issues they have taken on have been monumental while growing and protecting the brand , not to mention steering thru the country’s first health pandemic in a century.

For the life of me I can't understand why they didn't call a penalty on that play. The only thing I can think of was that the ball was there when the WR got hit. Or almost there. But he clearly hit him right in the helmet. Even if you want to dismiss the early hit as debatable, the helmet to helmet was the foul.

What has the NFL ever done to appease the fanbase? Why should they? Give me a reason. If you keep buying the shoe leather I sell you to eat, and I am making a fortune from it, why the hell would I care what you think about it? You keep buying it. I'm not doing anything to improve it. You would have to compel me in some way to change. Not just bellyache.
After thinking about your post more on the sports book connection with NFL I thought there was a more direct business connection with the league . Indeed there is.

NFL announces agreements with four approved sportsbook operators

Published: Aug 30, 2021 at 11:15 AM

NEW YORK -- The National Football League (NFL) today announced it has reached agreements with FOX Bet, BetMGM, PointsBet, and WynnBET to become Approved Sportsbook Operators for the 2021 NFL season. These agreements make all four operators eligible to purchase NFL in-game commercial units and other select NFL media inventory.
This past April, the NFL announced its first-ever U.S. sportsbook partnerships with Caesars Entertainment, DraftKings and FanDuel. As part of those deals, in addition to having the exclusive right to leverage NFL marks within the sports betting category, integrate into NFL O&O properties, and activate around retail and online sports betting, Caesars Entertainment, DraftKings and FanDuel may also leverage their Approved Sportsbook Operator status to secure premium NFL advertising inventory during games and around ancillary programming. No sportsbooks outside of these seven operators will be permitted to purchase this select NFL advertising and media inventory.

Flamma- I quoted where you stated there wasn’t any concern or connection from the NFL on sports betting. But this link which I quoted a couple key paragraphs spells it out. Sorry I quoted the wrong post. It was post#75

True and the only way to force change is thru litigation, financial hardship or public scrutiny .

And the changes in rules and administrative bylaws have adhered from the CTE scientific evidence to the backlash from players domestic violence to the social upheaval .

All brought action from the NFL to settle law disputes and calm public scrutiny .

If fans are truly fed up with officiating then complaining won’t be enough. They’ll have to meet their grievances with action .

And that action would probably include turning the channel. If there was a financial impact the league would have to take action if it was deemed this was the issue.

But most of these officiating issues are from select fans looking for excuses for their team. Occasionally a marquee team like with the Chiefs call brings the issue more to the forefront but most of the greater teams overcome poor or questionable officiating.

As far as that call I’d argue the officiating attempts to not want to call penalties at end of game . Let the players decide . I tend to agree. That wasn’t blatant enough IMO.

One minor problem is there is so much inconsistency with each ref crew, the players don't know how to manage their technique from game to game. Secondly, to depend on a ref to focus on a 4x6 inch replay camera with all the distractions on the field is ridiculous and time consuming esp. when the announcing booth has the right call before the ref has time to look at it from the field. I don't bet $$ on any games with so much control riding on the refs so at the end of the day, I'm not financially affected, however I would just like to see a game where the calls are consistent each week for both teams.

They're just sponsors. The NFL doesn't have any legal liability. Yes, the NFL can be paid to promote them, that doesn't mean they have to do anything to change their product. They could run the risk of losing money. But that would be the only thing to compel them to better their product. They don't have to do it legally.

If the team didn’t have bigger problems they could. There is not a league wide conspiracy against Micah. It’s just how the league is protecting QBs by allowing more holding.
I'd put money on it that they could not produce a tape because nobody gets held nearly as much as Parsons does without getting the calls.

Go ahead and try to do it. There absolutely is a conspiracy going on this year. Prove me wrong by showing me just one player with more pressures, less holding calls for, and with as many blatant no calls as we have seen so far for Parsons.

Can't be done.

That's the dumbest argument I've ever heard. Gamblers are fully aware of the state of officiating in the NFL: it's not like it's some secret. If they aren't factoring it in, tough. They have no special right to better officiating.
We'll see about that when the class action lawsuits start up.

There could be legal liability if the integrity of the games results were in question. Not to mention the pressure from Congress to uphold their Antitrust status.

The risk of compromising their revenue streams could also become a legal issue.

And why I wouldn’t say there wouldn’t be any legal concerns. Basically it all revolves around the NFL pledge and insistence on the Integrity of the games.

First of all I wouldn’t describe all of these non calls against Parsons not being called as a Conspiracy.

These observations are usually coming from the eyes of blind homers who feel their player is intentionally being slighted. Most of these calls could go either way. On the most part I’d argue sour grapes from fans .

I am not a gambler, but since the courts ruled that gambling on sports is legal, sports leagues, which are heavily bet on by legal gamblers, may ultimately be held responsibile for bad calls, especially those that are easily avoidable if everything was reviewable.

Add to that the NFL's antitrust exemption and there is likely a high-powered law firm just waiting to file a class-action suit and I am sure there are few people in congress that would jump at the chance to drag the NFL into a public investigation.

When it was mostly about owners and players making money, the fans and their complaints were mostly ignorable by everyone and the media benefitted from the NFL so it gave them little reason to bite that hand either.

Now though, things are different. The outcomes of games now represent a lot more than just fan happiness and satisfaction. Gamblers lose money. Cities lose revenue if they lose home playoff game hosting, etc.

Wth sports gambing now court-confirmed to be legal, the onus falls squarely on the NFL to provide and maintain integrity of games.

It would be one thing if the technology did not exist, but it does and it is available to everyone.
I've been saying this to everyone who claims the games are scripted or fixed.(Though, much less verbosely :muttley: ) It doesn't even budge their cynicism.

If you're wagering money you can't afford to lose on sporting events, then you deserve whatever comes your way.
So if the gamblers can afford to lose money, it's okay to have crappy officiating?

We’ve always had questionable and inconsistency in officiating .

More fans have access to complain now and plead their sour grapes especially if it impacts their teams results.

It’s usually the more marginal teams . If you’re winning championships no one is complaining about bad calls. Great teams overcome them just like overcoming an injury , turnover or the elements .

I get what florio is saying. but NFL is not there for gambling. its an entertainment business. Gambling is a side business flourishing as a result of NFL being what it is. league should manage its rules for itself, not to appease gamblers.

I agree, that officiating can be better. should be better. for the sake of the game and those playing and their fans, but not because of gambling
But the NFL wanted to legalize the gambling, and it benefits them. They have a responsibility to put out an honest and fair product. It's akin to a casino having loaded dice or brakes on the roulette wheels.

If I was the NFL I’d mandate not showing repeatedly every angle after the play while limiting the time officials have to make a decision.

We’ve always had gambling . I illegally wagered for over 3 decades. Nobody was complaining.

It’s not meant to be perfect . Everything is over analyzed . Remember these officials have to make these calls in live time not always at the best angle .

Replays reviews were initially intended to stop game changing plays near the end of the game. Not reviewing every frikin play.

This is all based on sour grapes from fans . It’s totally ridiculous and if the game lose its human element it loses me .

I think this offseason a major change is on the horizon. There is too much money on the line for them to do nothing. Bettors bring a whole new era of people to the game. I know people who know nothing about football but drop thousands a week go to bars and watch.
That new segment of wagering are dumber than dirt and deserve to lose. And they prob expect to like all the fools who feed Vegas.

There’s actually a professional group of handicappers and serious gamblers who aren’t complaining. They study and understand the risk and odds wagering accordingly.

if I was the NFL I’d limit the access for the fans. Limit the replays and views. If fans have same angle and views the officials do they won’t be questioning calls

I’d also limit the time the officials have to overturn and the amount of calls are allowed to review.

Casinos limit access for their patrons. They limit the amount of tables , how many players on each table , the amounts which can be wagered. It’s a much more controlled environment than most realize.

Same limitations for sports wagering. A very controlled environment. The fans access for the NFL is out of control .
