Here's an idea. My biggest issue with the play is that the ball and the runner's body is obscured, making it difficult at times to see where the ball should be spotted.

Maybe it should be ruled that the play is dead at the last point at which it was clear that the ball and runner were not down. That doesn't necessarily mean they have to see the ball or knees, etc. But at the first point at which they're not reasonably sure the player wasn't down, that's where they mark the ball.

It's a hard question to answer. On the one hand, losing a huge advantage would suck. On the other hand, I might feel like we were "cheating" in a way.

Without actually being in that position, I honestly don't know.
At least you took an honest stab at it RW. I look at the way people are about refs and all their conspiracy theory nonsense and I have a feeling the overwhelming majority would be screaming out all the reasons we should be able to do it, and that the rest of the league was just pissed because they can't do it as well, and that it was just the league being out to get us.

Ur the 1st person I've seen adress the bigger picture here...because EVERY team pushes ball carriers down the field when they are stood up by defenders in the open field.

But here's one: what if 1 defender meets 1 ball carriers in the open field and they "lock horns". Offensive players as you mentioned won't be able to come and push the ball carrier from behind further down the field. BUT...what about further defenders? Will they be able to "gang tackle" one guy, as is the case now, and use the force or 2, 3, 4 guys to drive 1 guy back? That doesn't seem fair either! And I HAVE seen dudes get hurt because they were gangle tackled.

This is a very slippery slope we're on.....
was not a slippery slope for decades with the old rule. Just like the catch idiocy that started with megatron. SHOULD NEVER HAVE CHANGED THAT EITHER.
All this comes from twiddling with the rules that should never have happened

Oh there's no doubt it would be seen by many as a conspiracy against us, especially if Goodell were leading the charge. Lol

Well, I have to agree with the Commish on this one. The "Tush-Push" has been perfected by Hurts and his Offense Buddies just like the "Horse Collar Tackle " was perfected by Dallas' Roy Williams. When Roy was using his favorite way to tackle his opponents the league started complaining about the victims Roy was stacking up, but the real issue was the league had no way to combat Roy's type of tackling that he had perfected to a tee so they banned it from being used which gave Roy's victims a sigh of relief knowing that they wouldn't be carted off the field if they happened to meet up with Roy when they played Dallas......LOL!

No, this is definitely different. The injuries were piling up, and the risk of career ending injuries was much greater.

If it is illegal to stack up and push the Oline, then it should be illegal to stack up and push the Dline.

How can they ban something only one team can do?

How soft is that?

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I feel teams should be able to stop it. But if someone gets hurt doing it then it should be banned.
So how many players need to get hurt to reevaluate? Nfl can't be proactive?

Pushing from behind on play design should be banned. The QB sneak portion is fine.

I don't see how banning it is controversial. It used to be illegal to "assist the runner" but then they removed the rule because it was supposedly difficult to judge. Just restore the rule that you can't push the runner. If they can still execute the play by having the line bulldoze their way forward and have the QB churn his legs behind them, then so be it. Just no pushing the ball carrier over the line of gain.
Correct-- being a 13 years football referee, it is a penalty to assist the runner.

I don’t see how you ban it. It’s a QB sneak. But As @Danny White you can ban the pushing from behind.

Good point Danny and you were/are still an under-appreciated player.

I think the Cowboys have a formation that can be almost just as effective. They did a qb sneak one time and another they ran it outside with Pollard. I’m guessing they have at least four plays and Dak can change to any of them depending on the look of the defense.

I do think the tush push should be banned though. It doesn’t make sense for player safety. It does mesh with the NFL’s push for more offense but I think the pendulum needs to swing back for the defense anyway.

Well I'm with u on that....but remember this is a different day and age than 20 or 30 years ago.

If you wanna say "let's just revert rules ro pre-2006" that seems fairly safe.

But...if they say "we're going to ban this offensive play because it COULD cause injuries (even though it hasn't)" THAT'S where I start worrying that the nut jobs will ruin the game.

If it gets banned, I still like players being able to move the ballcarrier forward. Maybe the rule could be that the tush push could still be done in shotgun or wildcat formation.
You can't have one without the other IMO (allowing the ball carrier to be pushed forward by teamates).

You want to see somone injured? I ask because that is probably a sure fire way by allowing a ball carrier to pick up speed into a stacked line with guys trying to push him forward afterwards.

In a way, this issue a good thing for the NFL because it stops people from talking about more pressing issues that need to be addressed, particularly officiating.
