Shawn Merriman *Several Merged Threads*

Yeah, at this pace Merriman is sure to have 48 sacks...

And the Chargers are going to finish with 144.

Time for people to get real. Let us play the freaking raiders.

Merriman's just on another level.

Ware could be there if we just turned him and the entire defense loose...Zimmer is, and has been ever since his first season as D-coordinator, afraid of the big play. As a result, he blitzes at predictable times in predictable ways.

Merriman is the next Lawrence Taylor, not Ware.

There was only one LT.

Neither Ware nor Merriman will be the next LT.

They will be either Ware or Merriman and have to make a name for themselves.

How I hate when someone says so and so will be the next LT or Barry Sanders or Jerry Rice or insert name here.

Lookit. It isn't like we took Mike Williams, Cedric Benson, or Pacman Jones instead of Merriman. We took Ware and he's going to be great.

Most people don't want to hear it, but at this point in their careers, I think it's obvious that Merriman is a better outside pass rushing lb than Ware, plain and simple.

He's a beast...Ware is not a beast yet.

I believe the only reason we selected Ware ahead of Merriman is because we weren't positive we'd be able to play the 3-4 that first season the way we did...there was still speculation that we'd be playing 4-3 if we struggled...Ware was clearly the best fit to put his hand on the ground and play DE in the 4-3...he gave us the most flexibility, imo.

But anyone who thinks Ware is as good at OLB in the 3-4 as Merriman at this stage of their careers is in denial....imho.

I'm not like a lot of you guys that pay special attention to the players, their stats, etc.. I mostly just watch the game.

BUT, I have to say this..... There's no way I could not miss what Merriman was doing last night. He was all over the place terrorizing the offense. I can truly say I don't recall ever seening that from Ware.

I won't argue wether it's due to the scheme, the offense he was playing against or any other reason. All I know is that he was playing like he is "hungry" for a championship, as were some of his team members.

Ware is a good player, but Shawn Merriman is better. And now we have Carpenter who can't even make the active list. (I know, I know, we're loaded at LB) - Which is all the more reason Carp wasn 't the best pick for us.

There's no way to spin this or downplay it.

Shawn Merriman is at a different level than Ware right now. Good grief, he looked good last night.

Ware will be a very good player, but my gosh, that was impressive. Merriman's passion and enthusiasm is contagious and that was a nimble QB he was chasing down, too.

I'm convinced Brooks wanted out of the game.

Brooks should be a backup QB in this league.

This in no way takes away from what Merriman did.

But man alive I just can't see how brooks is starting in Oakland.

The scary thing is he's just 22 years old. He's dominating the league at an age when most players are still in college. He doesn't even know the tricks, techniques or nuances of his craft. He's just playing on raw talent and energy.

Guys, we have Ware and he WASN'T a bad pick.

Get over it. You could say, we should have drafted Tom Brady considering he went in the sixth round 199th overall. We could have picked 100 different players, but sometimes you just don't know how they will turn out. Dan Wilkins was thought to completely dominate the NFL. Well, he isn't bad, but completely dominate. No. Many people laughed when the Cowboys drafted Emmitt Smith with the 17th overall pick. Remember the too small comments?

How many people were pissed off when we didn't draft Randy Moss? Great athlete? Yes. Great player? Not so sure about that! You just never know.

Merriman and Roy on the same team. Take a minute to imagine that.

The front seven would feed off of Merriman's passion and the secondary would feed off of Roy's passion.

We truly would have had a downright unbelievably nasty hardcore defense.

During Leftwich's streak of 10-11 completed passes in a row, if Merriman was playing, I wonder if he would've gotten pissed off and gone all out to hammer Leftwich to put an end to it.

Ware is the better athlete, I just want him to adopt Merriman's on-field mentality. Merriman truly believes that he is a one-man wrecking crew. I don't know if Ware believes that he is.

I just want another badass on defense besides Roy. That's all.

We have Bobby Carpenter, what more do you want?

I have yet to post in one of these threads yet but I cant hold out any longer.... I think that Ware is one heck of a player but hes quite... Reggie White, L.T. they all played like it was there last game and thats how Merriman plays.. .Now I dont know if Ware is being held back or what but Merriman seems like hes very passionate and other people on his team seem to feed off of that.... Im not sure which one I want more but it seems to me that this team needs a cocky loud mouth and not a laid back go getter.... I have yet to see anyone try and motivate this team.. Maybe we need TO on def. I dont know... But until our defense plays like there is no tomorrow then we will continue to be mediocre and not great.

Oakland has absolutley no ability to run the ball. There offense was abismal. Did you see there coordinator rumaging through his paperwork? I hope his resume was in there. He'll be gone by week 3.

I watched Merriman all game long. He had absolutley no assignments other than get the QB. As did all their linebackers. Once SanDiego realized Oakland offense was in total disarray, all they did was max blitz all night. I'm surprised he didn't have more sacks than 3. And that's only because other LB's beat him to Brooks. Even when Oakland tried to run, Merriman was pass rushing right by the running back.

That's the best game in the world to inflate your stats. Oakland is hands down the worst team in the league.

Good point.

I posted yesterday that I thought Dallas has the nicest defensive players in the league. Talented, but nice.

I lost count how many times I saw a Dallas defender help up a Jaguar offensive player on Sunday.

Dallas is trying for the good sportsmanship trophy.

LOL.

Man, I wake up and look at this board and see that alot of us are being real for a change, instead of just trying to defend our players cause of our own pride. Stunning.

Anyway, I believe Ware will still be equal to Merriman in all the stats that a LB can put up, meaning tackles for a loss and such going to Ware. My only point from last night is this, Merriman's intensity rubs off on his teamates. He is the emotion leader of that team, probably guarnateed a double digit sack season.

But Ware will have his moments too, and there will be people coming back and saying, "I told you so, Ware is better". I bet Ware has a 3 sack game this year also.

They are both good, but you just have to like the intagibles that Merriman brings.

:laugh2:

I saw that. They said he was running a bed and breakfast before Shell brought him back. He seemed totally befuddled.

I've seen him dominate against the Colts line last year. I also saw him shove Willie Roaf about 7 yards straight backwards on a bullrush last year to sack Trent Green.

And yeah, just like Ware, he has to drop back into coverage too. Maybe Shotty is running a passive scheme.
