Stephen Jones On Spencer, Possible DeMarco Extension

Apples and Oranges trying to compare the relative value of the two positions.

As Romo ages, and we are saddled with HIS contract, Murray becomes more valuable in protecting Romo because Tony can merely hand the ball off and side step the beating he usually takes most games.

We can afford to have both Dez and Demarco.

You all forget that the cap keeps expanding. You all harp on JJ frequently, but he knows more about finances and cap related numbers than we do.

He will be able to make this happen, guranteed. If we don't keep both, it will not be due to $$.

Plus RB's don't exactly break the bank too often. AP was an exception. I expect Forte numbers.

Hey, I'm not big on the Romo contract either. LOL!

Matt Forte signed a 4 year / $30.40 million contract with the Chicago Bears, including a $4,000,000 signing bonus, $13,800,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $7,600,000.

lets agree to disagree

Eight in the box, you throw the ball.

And that's a valid point with Dez.

But if the Cowboys have to bend over and grap their ankles I'd rather they do it with Dez rather than Murray.

Or, why not pay him what is fair market at the conclusion of the season, and also for Dez. The market increases in 2015 and 2016 leave quite a bit of adjustment room.

Then continue adding via the draft as was the course to this point. Give the $7 million increase some credit, as well as a combined increase of about $17 million by 2016. That could well tip things closer to the here and now.

I don't think that Dez Bryant gets cheated out of a single penny, just being realistic.

And the Cowboys may. Like I posted before, it will sort itself out one way or the other.

Well no matter what we think, this will play out in one of three ways...

1. Murray is resigned/extended and receives a contract at $7mil per year (or more).

2. Murray is resigned/extended and receives a contract less than $7mil per year.

3. Murray signs with another team.

We'll see how things play out.

I would consider giving him a 3 year incentive based deal between $2.5 - $7 Mill provided he continues to ball thru all 16 games, but I suspect we might lose him in FA and we draft somebody in the 3rd. I really believe he is just now entering his prime and has a good 3 years left in the tank though...

Are you a Dallas Cowboys fan ? Or a Dez fan ?

If the first your question should not be if we should keep Dez. Your question should be: Does a NFL franchise need a dominant WR to win the SB. And the answer to that is: No.

So everything else is so meaningless.

I was just responding to the Dez isnt dominate post but to you question a Cowboy fan first and always. you dont have to have a pro bowl quarterback or left tackle to play in the big game either but it sure as hell helps wouldnt you say?

Then explain why the league average pay for running backs is still in the neighborhood of $9 million for a franchised player.

These are the salaries of the top ten running backs for 2014:

Adrian Peterson at Running Back$11,750,000
2 LeSean McCoy at Running Back$7,650,000
3 Marshawn Lynch at Running Back$6,000,000
4 Matt Forte at Running Back$5,950,000
5 Arian Foster at Running Back$5,750,000
6 Jamaal Charles at Running Back$4,100,000
7 Reggie Bush at Running Back$3,500,000
8 C.J. Spiller at Running Back$3,498,750
9 Frank Gore at Running Back$3,300,000
10 Steven Jackson at Running Back$3,000,000

Because the league takes the average of the top guys.

AP's ridiculous contract mucked it up.

The franchise figure for RB's for 2014 was $8 mil.

I agree with you there and would say Calvin Johnson contract did the same at WR

I am projecting that Murray ends up around the top five in the NFL, and then do a cross reference to how that level is currently being paid.

As to actual tag amounts, this is what they were for 2014:

Franchise tags

Quarterback: $16.192 million
Running back: $9.54 million
Wide receiver: $12.312 million
Tight end: $7.035 million
Offensive lineman: $11.654 million
Defensive end: $13.116 million
Defensive tackle: $9.654 million
Linebacker: $11.455 million
Cornerback: $11.834 million
Safety: $8.433 million
Kicker/punter: $3.556 million

It's telling that the franchise amount for RB is only 4th highest.

Again, the value of running backs isn't like it use to be.

I think it's presently established that a strong running back hits the $3 - $4 million annual salary range. I don't think that tendencies in the offense changes that. Just like a safety, a running back is invaluable to a team...

If a runner is hitting around 1600 yards rushing in a season...oh, you can bet that he gets paid for just that. At least as long as it lasts.

14 games isn't 16 games.

I'm not a big Emmitt fan but he was out there virtually every game come heck or high water.

Tony D. was the same.

On top of that we've got 2 fumbles in the last 2 games.
actually it's 3 in 3 games running now

Just as point of reference back in 2008, MB3 signed a contract with the Cowboys for 7 years and $45 mil.
