Stephen Jones On Spencer, Possible DeMarco Extension

I think it's presently established that a strong running back hits the $3 - $4 million annual salary range. I don't think that tendencies in the offense changes that. Just like a safety, a running back is invaluable to a team...

If a runner is hitting around 1600 yards rushing in a season...oh, you can bet that he gets paid for just that. At least as long as it lasts.

All the guys are invaluable but you have to balance future productivity against that salary against the salary/talent needs over the course of the rest of the team. Rosters spots/Roster talent/Salary/Salary cap... it's a delicate balancing act.

Final analysis, Jerry pays a player what he is worth...the balancing act is whether that player is indeed loyal, or just in it for himself.

Jerry pays a player what he thinks the player is worth. Sometimes it's higher than we think, sometimes not.

We'll see how this plays out.

Dunbar is a completely different back... He's 5'8"/195lbs. Comparing apples and oranges.

Plus Dunbar was signed as UFA out of college.

Spend a 3rd draft pick on another RB and you'll probably find someone of similar talent to Murray.

You could find a stud running back in the 3rd round, and it is easier to find them later than many other positions. Having said that, Murray was a first round talent (and we graded him at that at the time) and getting a player like that so late in the draft is the exception rather than the rule.

Incidentally, I think we also graded Witten high and that turned out pretty well. When you grade players properly and stick to your board, you tend to get value out of the draft. We weren't looking for a running back specifically, but we took him based on our board. The problem is that the guy who falls to you that you have graded that high may not be a running back. Then what do you do?

I would love to see us keep Murray at a responsible cap number. The average per year of the top contracts is irrelevant (except as to the franchise tag number). Some of that will never be paid to the player and really wasn't realistically expected to be paid. It just prorates the signing bonus over a longer term.

So those top ten paid backs, only one was a third round pic.

So this, oh we can just draft a stud in the third or fourth round, has to be one of the bigger myths going.

edit. foster was an udf

fourth rounders more times than not get you the tashard choices of the world

We'll see how this plays out.

During Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson's early years, and prior to the '92 season, this was the comment by Jimmy Johnson in a team meeting towards the unsigned players on the roster: 'I do care that you guys get what you deserve. But my job is to ****in' win football games. I believe that there is enough talent in this room to win, no matter what happens to you unsigned guys.'

When Emmitt blinked during his holdout, he was resigned. As to Troy, he only got a new contract during the month of December. Some of other players chose to move on.

Oh, loyalty has always been a sticking feature for both a coach or a player...

NO EXTENSION FOR RB'S
ESP SINCE HIS INJURT HISTORY

AM SPENCER FOGET ABOUT IT

Only meaningful statement for me is "No different than Dez" = they are going to let both test the market and see if they want to match the offer (probably not.)

This thread is funny. Murray has been great this year and his going to be a depended more since Romo has back problems. People think we can just let Murray go and have someone similar or better. If I was GM, that would be a bad move. What if we don't get someone similar or better and get someone worst?

I'd try to sign Murray and if he wants too much, then so be it. Gotta stop this notion that he is easy to replace. Because he isn't. Plus I'd rather draft defense or a right tackle in the 3rd round. Why waste a high rounder on a running back?

Perhaps they will see who falls to them in the draft, then discuss $ with Murray.

However, our current slew of Randle and Dunbar are not worthy of replacing Murray.

The other side of the equation is that perhaps this team needs to start extending these players when they are in their 2nd or 3rd year. If the talent is recognized early, then lock em up.

No need to wait until they are in their final year, ala Dez

This is a stupid thread just 2 games into the season.
So many busting blood vessels so soon.
Everybody will be changing their tune if Murray has his annual injury again.
Which is more likely to happen than not- given his history.

Worry about this stuff when it gets to Week 14 or so.
Hoo-sah people.

Matt Forte signed a 4 year / $30.40 million contract with the Chicago Bears, including a $4,000,000 signing bonus, $13,800,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $7,600,000.

And with our cap situation I think it is wisest to let Demarco walk and take our chances on what we have, including Ryan Williams, who may be quite adequate indeed. Beast.

I was just responding to the Dez isnt dominate post but to you question a Cowboy fan first and always. you dont have to have a pro bowl quarterback or left tackle to play in the big game either but it sure as hell helps wouldnt you say?

I did not want to offend you. So sorry if it sounded that way.

What i wanted to show is in essence what you posted. You dont need one (i stick to a franchise WR here because its part of the topic of this thread).

Of course it may help in that specific situation. Means: when the game actually is played you may win it with him and lose it woithout him. But to compare his impact in a specific game the rest of your team must be the same. But with the salary cap your team will not be the same when you have to pay a franchise WR. So now the question will become: How do i invest my money to get the most value out of it.

And value here becomes the integral part. Value IS NOT the performance of one player. Because this is a team sport and only the team can win a game (not one player alone) value is measured by the performance of the whole team. Also with the salary cap implemented value becomes also a function of a players teamperformances in relation to his salary. So signing players must be measured by this value.

I think its easy to set up a mathematic measurement (algorithm) to find the teamvalue for a certain position in relation to the salary they will command. I hope Dallas has something like that because without it i would not understand how someone could lead a successful sport franchise.

In the end with limited resources you always maximize your profit by going against market tendencies. For our franchise that means: Never pay big money for positions everybody is interested in. Go against tendencies and you will get the most out of your investement.

Winning these days in the NFL comes throu a team that is good at every position and has good backups. No team is winning with 5 franchise players and medicore players at the other positions.

Best thing to do with Murrey is franchise him

9.5 million this year for RB.

Ryan Williams says hello. He needs a new contract also, but signed for a half million on his one year contract with us this year and shouldn't have a big asking price for next year. We'll also have Randle, Dunbar and whoever else we bring in.

We could use the difference (say 8 million) to sign a free agent, like a safety or defensive end who is a stud. Or both.
