Smith would be the balancing force to this offense IMO. If we signed him, I believe that we could become the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl. With his kind of speed, even if you lost TO, Witten and Crayton would still be effective underneith. His kind of speed would force double coverage and there is no way you could play man to man on everybody else. His kind of speed would force LB coverage on Felix Jones as well. You could not keep a safety in tight to play Jones. You would almost have to try and go with a LB or play Nickle all the time, in which case, MBIII would eat your lunch for you. He is small but with our offense, he would be able to avoid a lot of the punishment he takes in Carolina. In our offense, you simply could not afford to focus on him the way teams focus on him in Carolina. He would be awsome.

OK, you should give the pregame prep talks. This post got me stoked.

Smith is not as good as some of you would like to think.

He puts up numbers from time to time, but his ego is bigger than his game.

His ego's bigger than his game, and he's good. He's a game changer and a superstar in my book. That's why the Panthers would be nuts to trade him.

Post of the thread for sure.

You touched on the #1 reason to upgrade opposite TO that I think the "we have enough at WR" crowd doesn't get, and that's how screwed we'd be if he went down.

Smith turned 29 in May and has played 7 seasons. This is total speculation on my part, but I've always felt his dimensions and talent could make for a very long career. At 5-9 185 he's a rock. He's not just some super quick little guy. He's very strong and breaks a lot of tackles. He's quick and small
enough to avoid most killer shots yet still strong enough to absorb big hits.

He could be a 13-15 year type player and is well on his way to the HOF. I think he has at least 4-5 PB type years left without any noticeable drop-off in play.

His value to Carolina and price tag in a trade would be huge. More than any proposed trade in this thread.

I think our 2008 1st, 2nd, WR Crayton and CB Brown might get it done.

Uhhh.... why do we even entertain such nonsense rumors?

There is no way in sam hell the Panthers would trade Steve Smith.
He is far and away the most beloved player on the team.

Take it from a guy who lives in Carolina and is surrounded by Panthers fans everyday all day.

Not gonna happen.

Thats funny. The skins don't have a WR half as good as Steve Smith or his ego.

I agree. It's why the educated fans here want him so bad.

Although I don't think it happens, the only reason it's even a thread is the disciplinary action just taken by the team.

Smith seems like a pipe dream, but out of all those guys we have been interested in this would be the guy I would want, a true deep threat and much like T.O. whenever he touches the ball he can score.

IMO, you could argue that Smith is the 3rd best WR in the the league behind Moss and Owens. He lacks an elite QB to showcase his real skills.

Yes i read it.

And i still believe theres no way the Panthers would ever seriously consider trading Steve Smith.

They have a hard enough time getting fans to come to the games as it is...
If they trade Steve Smith...

How is Matt Mosley of ESPN a nonsensical rumor when he's talking to people who mention they are discussing it?

PANTHERS DONE WITH SMITH?
Posted by Mike Florio on August 4, 2008, 9:23 p.m.

In the wake of Friday’s troubling incident between receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucas, the Panthers could be thinking about life without the talented-but-troubled wideout.

Matt Mosley of ESPN.com reports that there are “rumblings” out of Panthers camp that the team is fed up with Smith’s actions, and are at least considering the idea of trading him.

Mosley says that Smith has become a “divisive force” on the team: “One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn’t discipline Smith, they would.”

And Mosley, whose covers the NFC East for ESPN.com’s post-Hashmarks blog project, partially justifies his encroachment upon Pat Yasinskas’ NFC South turf by suggesting that the Cowboys could be Smith’s ultimate destination.

Other teams that would at least consider Smith include, in our view, the Eagles, Vikings, Bears, and Commanders.

Assuming that Smith wouldn’t want a new deal, his cap charge for 2008 is a very manageable $1.75 million. Because it’s after June 1, the Panthers wouldn’t take a cap hit for the move until 2009.

Smith currently is signed through 2012. His future salaries are $3.4 million 2009, $5.75 million in 2010, $7 million in 2011, and $7.75 million in 2012.
