This contract is incredible. As good as Smith is, you also have to factor in the contract he has. Both the financial obligation Dallas is taking on and the cap hit Carolina takes.

This contract significantly increases Smith's value in a trade. If for no other reason, because this contract will cost the Cowboys about half the cap dollars they'd probably have to fork over if they signed Smith as a FA.

Think about that for a second. What if Steve Smith was a FA? We just gave 29 year old Newman a 6 yr 49mil deal.

Any team that successful trades for Smith, will only have to pay him 25.65mil over the next 5 years.
That's probably half what he'd command in a FA deal.

Now look at the cap hit Carolina's got to take. With 5 years left on his deal you'd have to guess his un-prorated SB would be 7-10 mil range.

Taking all this into account, I'd up the ante.

2009 1st, 2009 2nd, 2009 3rd, WR Crayton and CB Henry.

It is a little beneath Mosley to rumor-monger.

That's a good one.

That being said, he's at least treating it as a rumor instead of speculating and treating it like it's a fact.

I seriously doubt that.

And if you did watch the Panthers, you'd know that Smith is a phenomenal football player.

Blast me all you want. As I have stated year after year...I watch EVERY NFL game.

Watching and comprehending are totally two different things. Smith is an elite player.

He (Smith) would complete our 1-2 punch at WR and leave all the body shots wide open for Witten, Barber and company.

Carolina would want a replacement WR plus more. They're eating cap so we could do to same due to Smith's salary this year.

Trade Patrick (they would have their vet WR) and a young WR (maybe Austin to replace their speed at the WR position). Then add in the necessary drafts picks as needed.

Smith will take Patrick's spot, one of the bubble WR (Amendola, Jefferson) takes Austins spot.

No need to deplete our depth at other positions, use draft picks to complete the deal.

Having said that, Carolina would be stupid to lose their best offensive weapon. I just don't see it happening. Dang, I hope I'm wrong.

for the love of silly dressed brittish gods of long ago.

why do so many people insist on trading crayton now? why must we always have trade bait running around on the team? and then, why do people just make trades w/o even looking at cap ramifications?

god i hate madden.

I'm having a hard time letting go of this post. Let me get this straight. You're wanting to basically give up our entire 2009 draft (the first three picks is essentially giving up the whole draft) and two starters for a WR that has anger issues and likes to punch out his teammates? Yea, he's talented, but he's not Randy Moss at 24 years old. Think I'll take a pass. That would be one of the worst trades in history. Reminds me of when we screwed the Viks in the Walker trade.

WE have the cap room. Smith has a low salary.

Smith is a total upgrade over Patrick. They get a proven vet to fill their hole at the WR position. Patrick is not untouchable by any means.

You don't think Jerry would include Patrick in a deal that would give us a proven #1 / #2 WR to team up with TO? Patrick would be a minor speedbump in this trade scenario.

One last thing. Smith's contract is favorable, but you don't think he's going to want a new one sometime in the near future? I guarantee you he'll holdout at some point for more $ regardless what team he's on. Bank on it.

Agreed, but giving up Crayton, Henry, and our whole 2009 draft borders on idiocy.

Also iceberg, I am well aware of the cap hit of Patrick, approx. 5 mil, which would be pushed into next year. I'm sure Carolina is going to be taking a cap hit also.

You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet (superbowl). This would be upgrading one of our weaker links

Crayton fits because he has a longer deal in place. See the cap hit we take with Crayton would be something similar to what the Panthers would take with Smith.
I was guessing that the cap hit for Carolina would be 7-10 mil. What would it be for us? I'm fairly certain both teams could spread that out over 2008 and 2009.

Crayton is a decent starting WR that Carolina could certainly use to soften the blow of losing Smith.

Henry is another now element of the trade for Carolina to help their defense this season.

The 2009 1st, 2nd and 3rd are likely to be the 30-32, 60-64 and 90-96 picks.

Star, did you read my post. I think you mixed it with other post to get that stupid trade scenario. Cause that's not what I posted.

Try again. :D

i'm talking about craytons salary and bonus that would come into play here. you want to talk about not depleting our depth and then you give up our 1st 3 round of our next draft and TWO players for ONE position.

like i said, i hate madden. you can rationalize all you want but that was a bucket of chicken droppings of a suggestion on the trade.
