Can someone explain to me the Tony Romo/moxy thing? I feel like I'm missing something.

some reporter described Romo as having moxie, or I think it was Parcells, one of the 2

Wrong again buddy, my sig has been that for a year. Have only posted about it twice until this thread in a span of 10 months. More cred lost, Mr. Agenda.

The impression I'm getting is that you guys have had this discussion before. I, however, can't recall this 'soft' issue being previously discussed.

Doubt what, chief. That you've lost cred or that I'm a coach? Because both are true.

At any rate, I'm not sure 'soft' would be my adjective of choice; however, the team is definately underperforming. The defence is the truly disturbing area, given the resources that have been piled into it. No more excuses for Zimmer, I'm afraid.

it's a mix of underperforming, and mental mistakes, more mental mistakes IMO, but I don't see a lack of effort, or toughness in this group

First, its not like i've never mentioned the fact that i'm a coach. Secondly, my screen name has a different meaning from the rapper. Although, I do think his music is tight. Anyhow, you took your beating well.

What has him troubled — what has him waking up choking on his bile — isn’t what you might expect. It’s not concern that the Commanders’ coaching staff could spring something on the Cowboys for which they are entirely unprepared. And it’s not his team’s raw ability. It’s a thing that’s harder to put into words, and impervious to strategy. Even as he is trying to study his next opponent, he can’t shake what happened on Sunday. How his team, the moment the Jaguars pushed back, collapsed. How, the moment the players felt the pressure, they began to commit penalties and the sort of small but critical mental errors that only a coach watching video can perceive. In their performance he smells the sort of failure he defines himself against.
At the back of Parcells’s personal binder there are a few loose, well-thumbed sheets that defy categorization: a copy of a speech by Douglas MacArthur; a passage from a book about coaches, which argues that a coach excels by purifying his particular vision rather than emulating a type. Among the papers is an anecdote Parcells brings up often in conversation, about a boxing match that took place nearly 30 years ago between the middleweights Vito Antuofermo and Cyclone Hart. Parcells loves boxing; his idea of a perfect day in the off-season is to spend it inside some ratty boxing gym in North Jersey. “It’s a laboratory,” he says. “You get a real feel for human behavior under the strongest duress — under the threat of physical harm.” In this laboratory he has identified a phenomenon he calls the game quitter. Game quitters, he says, seem “as if they are trying to win, but really they’ve given up. They’ve just chosen a way out that’s not apparent to the naked eye. They are more concerned with public opinion than the end result.”

This is an exerpt from the NY Times story posted about BP.. I recently started a thread that stated that I felt team thought we were soft. I had no evidence for that thought, but it was just a feeling a got. This exerpt explains my views about how we play against quality teams. It has nothing to do with wanting more thugs or trouble makers, but everything to do with having too many nice guys. Roy, Ware, Ellis, FLo, JJ, etc. They are all nice guys and are on the verge of being labeled the "Game Quitters", as well as others on this team! And this bothers the hell outta me.

This is an outstanding post and I can totally relate to what BP is speaking of.

I am a former NC State wrestling champion in high school and went to college on a wrestling scholarship. The boxing analogy is something I can relate to and have spoken of many times.

I was formerly a high school coach and spoke to my wrestlers of this often.

Early in my career it was easier for me to give 95% and lose than to give 110% and lose (ala - taking a dive. I was a GAME QUITTER). If I DID NOT give 100% and lose I could always justify the loss in my mind. If I did give 100% and got my *** handed to me in front of a gym full of people it was almost impossible for me to swallow.
It wasn't until I finally made the commitment to totally sell out and go for broke come hell or high water that I achieved the success I was seeking.I had to quit settling for close and become one mean SOB.

We must develop that nasty mentality before we can expect to win games in the 4th quarter when its on the line.

this team lacks confidence in their ability. they need a spark to wake them from their apparent doldrums. i don't see the burning desire. i don't see the team making a commitment. they haven't sold out for each other. like when gurode got stepped on by henderson - at least one cowboy shoulda been ejected for retaliating. these guys are punching a clock - and that's all. it would be too Hollywood-scriptish if the new starting QB Romo were to supply that kinda spark... but d*** - i'm ready for a good ole fashioned feelgood ending to this almost decade-long general malaise my Cowboys have been in.

won't somebody step up and supply the kinda fire we used to get from players like Irvin, Norton, Emmitt, Kenny Gant, etc. ???!!!!

and coach Parcells... maybe it's time you tweaked it up a notch yourself. these are your guys from the coaches to the players. let 'er rip. 'cuz that staring-at-the-hole-in-the-roof thing didn't seem to motivate your team one iota.

somebody please step up and shake this team awake.

by the way... cool vito antuafermo(sp) ref, fiddy. hagler vs. antuafermo was a landmark for me. it drew my attention, back in the late 70's/early 80's, to weight classes other than heavy and welter. hagler was my favorite fighter of the 80's. i'm still not over the way he got jobbed in sugar-ray's "hometown" - las vegas (palmer park west!)...

Can We Make This A "dumbest Thread Of The Year Candidate?" All Speculation Which On The Street Could Lead To The Death Of A Guy Named 50cent Or Someone Else For That Matter. Enough Of The Bs Perception. Halfcent.

When i originally brought this up, the first person I thought of was TO. He was still with Philly at the time, but he seemed to bring a spark for the entire team. When we got TO, I thought it was for the same reason. To provide a spark, but it seems he hasn't been embraced like I thought he would. Especially by BP. As for Hagler, I always liked him, mostly after beat Hearns down. Although, I have to admit, I'm a Sugar guy.

When someone can call an actually reference from the Coach speculation, then you'll have a point. In the meantime, move on.

How do you hijack a thread? I mean really explain this to me! CAuse the last I checked, people were still posting about the original purpose of the thread. Move on. Thanks for the bump.
