Please, Please don't take offense and take responses for what they are. Sydia and you should just realize that the board has spoken, The Cowboys FO has spoken, The HC has spoken, Jerry has spoken. This subject and the endless repetition of threads is boring. We and they don't want these old guys at any price.
Both Mayowa and Tank are also stop gap players, both maybe younger but certainly not nearly as talented. Freeney and Dumervil have rings, intangibles plus the same production. Both are vet presences in locker room & can mentor the real up and coming young players. Marinelli is a resource but he should not be the ONLY resource. And there is only so much Marinelli to go around.
I would rather have Freeney over Mayowa any day. I would also sign Daryl Washington as well. Vets are not the anti-christ, they are the yin to this very young team's yang. Would thinks that Witten and Sean Lee are progress stoppers or more importantly a negative to the team? The D lacks leadership outside of Lee. It would be nice to add a winner on the DL. Imagine how much better Taco and Maliek's spin moves can be once Freeney shares some of his stuff.
No they are young, developmental player killers and they usually cost way more than justified based on past glory. The NFL is a young man's game today and we need to let these young players develop on the field and let them sink or swim in the deep end of the pool. Why take some other team's old castoffs who make way too much money for now too little production.
That 400k does add up though. Essentially if you were to get a Freeney a guy like Tapper is someone who would be his competition. So a NFL organization asks themselves would they rather be paying 600k for a rookie or young NFL guy who's hungry or spend 1 million on a Freeney. I know the 400k seems like nothing when you are dealing with a hundred million plus on the salary cap but these organizations penny pinch. Its all about getting your money's worth especially on a team where you have people overpaid as it is.
No matter how many times you say it, it's not going to come true.
Freeney cost only $1MM last year, for example. Further, Freeney was on a modified practice schedule apparently so he wasn't taking tons of reps in practice from younger players. Further, some of the young edge rushers praised Freeney for being a great teacher and leader for them. Beasley credited his break out year on Freeney.
Now unless there are a rash of injuries, the Cowboys are set at DE for now. But this idea that there is no benefit to bringing a guy like Freeney in if we had a need is some of the silliest stuff uttered on this board.
You sir are entitled to your opinion but, as you can see from the board and especially from the Cowboy's FO, we and they do not agree with your view one bit. You can keep saying what your saying and trying to confuse the facts on the ground but, nothing is going to change this side of the start of the season IMVHO.
Note, I am not suggesting we sign Freeney now. I said that at the start that the ship has sailed.
I am talking about the larger point here where people have a complete aversion to older players that they apparently carry huge contracts, will stall the development of younger players, etc.
That's not a certainty and it quite shortsighted. Use Freeney as an example........... Freeney cost only$1MM and he didn't stunt the development of the young edge players on the Falcons. Instead, Freeney got praise for the leadership and tutelage he provided guys like Beasley.
There is most definitely value for a franchise in signing guys like Freeney or other quality vets (hopefully on one year deals).

Yes, there is definite value to signing a guy like Freeney but now is not the time. At this point, however, with he and Dumervil would only be considered emergency relief. It may be too late, however, to add them to the team for purely leadership potential.
They signed an older vet in Carroll to fill a hole at CB. They signed a 29 year old Paea as a plug in at DT. Both are on deals where the Cowboys can cut bait in the near future. They are short term fixes.
The notion that the Cowboys will not and do not sign older, veteran players and only are now about taking on young players is false.
The facts are older vets don't often cost a lot. You said that. It's false. You also continually inject the ridiculous line that older players stunt the development of younger players. That's false. I mean Nolan Freaking Carroll, who was one of the worst CBs in football last year, was brought in and likely could be a starter at one of the CB spots over younger players like Awuzie. Where's your outrage there?
Inadvertently I suspect, you made my case. The Cowboys FO did bring in Carroll for $10mil with 3mil guaranteed and Paea and they are older. The FO obviously wanted them and the coaching staff wanted them. The FO obviously has a different view and analysis of Carroll just like Broaddus does as he finds him just as good if not better than what we had starting last year. Marrinelli obviously wanted Paea because of their past relationship. The Cowboys do not want Freeney or Dumervil or they would have brought them in for a looksee. Naturally, I trust McClay's opinion on these players 100 times better than your's or PFF's.
The "progress stopper" thing is pretty accurate. The organization has been using that as it's crutch to get it through tough cap times.
It has now cemented itself as a philosophy and fans have bought into it, even to the extent that even marginal talent that will never be more than what they are could somehow have their growth stunted by a veteran. It is just about finding cheap players, not necessarily the best, even for situational roles. Perhaps that will change in the future, but I doubt it.
Whole heartedly disagree.
On a per snap basis, Freeney's production is not on the level of any of the pass rushers on our team. He was absent on the stat sheet against Green Bag as well. Saying he would've been the difference is judging his past only.
And this is while playing on the same line as arguably the best pass rusher in the NFL last season.
