Whats the big deal about Jordy Nelson?

I think it's a matter of people (usually good people) falling prey to racial stereotypes.

I know it's not Political Correct but I am going to go out on a limb and say that Nelson is chronically underrated because is a white guy playing a position almost never played by white WRs any more. He plays flanker and/or split-end. He isn't a slot guy.
What position are white WRs playing these days?

He might be that he is more of a long strider. I suspect if your compared their times in the 60 or 80 the different would be bigger.

At least that's why my untrained eye tells me when I see him play.

He was the state champion 100 meter sprinter in high school- long strider.

Other than having a great QB to get him the ball I don't understand why is considered a top tier WR. He has always reminded me of a Joe Jurevicius type but only slightly better.
Your thoughts?

Precise routes
Anticipation
Being on same page as your QB
Ability to get separation

There is a lot more that goes into being a great WR than just natural talent

The guy was also a heck of a return man while at Kansas St.. He hasn't been used as a returner that much with the Packers.

He did it some, mostly in 2009 and 2010.

Career stats:
Punt returns 17 for 90 yards
Kick returns 59 for 1339 yards

Jordy reminds me of a modern day Steve Largent. Not that fast and very deceptive. But he always finds ways to get open and puts up great numbers. I maybe a Cowboy homer but I respect a great players when I see one. Jordy is a great player. He is one of the top receivers in the NFL.

This is gonna be a great game. Both teams are almost equally matched. This is what Cowboy's playoffs are all about. Greatness happens during these situations.

I'm not sure if you're serious or not.

Not that fast? Have you even watched him play?

He's nothing like Largent.

He's not deceptively fast....he's fast! I think he has more in common with Roddy White than Largent. He's big, strong, runs good routes. He's quick in and out of his breaks. But he also has great straight line speed. He isn't fooling anyone when he runs by them. Corners know by now that he's fast. The still are blown away.

Nelson is a great athlete. Let's not try to make excuses.

Frankly, the Joe Jurevicius (sp?) comparison is insulting... Nelson has taken over games... yes, he and Rodgers are dialed in
but Jordy Nelson had big games with Matt Flynn at QB... even in this passing league, their aren't many 1500 yard WRs with 10+ TDs
out there... those are his piers..... (and, just to be clear, although Dez doesn't have 1500 yds, I put him the elite category based on TDs/games taken over.)

Yes, that was a silly comparison.
Joe Jurevicius
323 rec for 4119 yards and 29 TDs in 10 years

Jordy Nelson
400 rec for 6019 yards and 49 TDs in 7 years

D. Jackson, Julio Jones, TY Hilton, Dez, Calvin, AJ Green.

I don't consider Jackson to be on par with those other guys. He seems to disappear in games too much. Hilton probably isn't, either. At least not yet. Antonio Brown should be on this list with Jones, Bryant, Johnson and Green. I think Nelson fits in well with those other guys. Demaryius Thomas, too.

We're talking deep threats. Not overall best WR's. Jackson, Hilton are really good at the deep ball.

Who said I was making excuses? I'm saying that he is deceptively fast and that he's numbers in his combine doesn't reflect how great he is. He did run a 4.5 very similar to Dez's numbers which isn't really reflective of how fast on how he plays.
Thus I consider him like a modern day Steve Largent. Which is why I stated he is not that fast. Maybe I should retract that and state that he is deceptively fast which I really wanted to emphasize in the first place.

But I do agree with you about him. I think he is a great athlete. Don't get to hung up by me saying that he isn't fast. I just meant to say that he has deceptive speed regardless of his 4.5 combine speed time.

His 40 times is 4.51. Only a .01 second difference between his and Dez's. So he's not exactly a burner which is why I always wonder how he gets behind a defence so frequently.

Strength and good route running.

I can still visualize multiple passes where Romo put it up for him to catch and he either didn't go up after it or he made a half-asst attempt,,, and this last game there was a perfect back shoulder pass that went right through his hands.

Catch Rates:
Catch Rate
Dez 64%
T. Williams 58%

Some other #2 WRs:
Rueben Randle 55%
Alshon Jeffery 58%
J. Kearse (Seattle) 57%

I think he has deceptive speed because of his height. The perception is that shorter players tend to appear quicker than the taller players, but some of those fast, taller players will run by you anyways.
