Every so often I think back to May of 2003. Spurs ended the Lakers string of three straight titles. How many teams would of acted like it was a championship. All but one team. The Spurs. There was no huge celebration or anything like that.

Yes. It's the other guys the Lakers have that are superior to the Mavs.

I would say Bynum compared to Chandler, but he is inconsistent and can't stay healthy. Dirk is one of the elite players in the league, Gasol while very very good player, is still a second tier player.

It's players like Kobe, Artest, and Odom off the bench along with Derek Fisher's experience that make the Lakers better. It doesn't hurt to have Phil Jackson as a coach either.

I'm not in the group that says Dallas' bigs are better than the Lakers' guys, but no need to go over the top in your bashing.

BTW, it may be better to match Odum with Marion, not Haywood. Though this year, Odum would get the nod, imo.

Pretty much every NBA player and coach says Dirk is elite...very possibly Hall of Fame level. No, he is not Kobe or some the other ultra-elites but the guy is a special player.

We all know Dirk's a great scorer, but also has averaged appox 8.5 rebounds, 1 blk, 1 stl and 3 assists to go with that scoring. Plus he 2 ppg and averages > 10 rebounds during the playoffs for his career.

For example, here are their playoff averages (or when it's clutch time):

Nowitzki: 25.6 PPG and 10.9 RPB
Gasol: 18.5 PPG and 9.5 RPG

But Dirk only scores...nothing else.
There aren't too many people that have played as many playoff games as Dirk has
and average > 25ppg and > 10 rpg....nearly 26 and 11 on average.

It's pretty rare...almost nobody has done that.
Certainly not Garnet or Stoudemire.
Not even Duncan (don't worry, I'm not saying Dirk is better than even him )

Funny how some people say Dirk is not an elite player. Is winning an MVP Award and leading a team to the finals in 06-07 not considered elite? Sure Duncan has had more success, but surely you can not call Dirk not an elite player.
