Why didn't we pick an offensive lineman with our first three picks you asked?

The Cowboys have drafted 5 Olinemen in the last 3 drafts, and signed a Olineman free agent who is only 25 years old and a former 3rd round pick. This is AFTER picking up current starters Terence Steele and Tyler Biadasz as rookies in 2020. This is not including Tyron Smith or Zack Martin. EXACTLY how many Olinemen do you suppose they need?

Cowboys Current Olinemen:
2011 - OT Tyron Smith (1st round)
2014 - OG Zack Martin (1st round)
2020 - C Tyler Biadasz (4th round)
2020 - OT Terence Steele (UDFA)
2021 - OT/OG Josh Ball (4th round)
2021 - OG Matt Farniok (7th round)
2022 - OT Tyler Smith (1st round)
2022 - OT Matt Waletzko (5th round)
2022 - OC Alec Lindstrom (UDFA)
2022 - OC Brock Hoffman (UDFA)
2023 - Signed OT/OG Chuma Edoga (2019 3rd round pick of Jets)
2023 - OT/OG Asim Richard (5th round)
2023 - OT Earl Bostick, Jr. (UDFA)
2023 - OG T.J. Bass (UDFA)

By my count, even if they keep Tyler Smith at Left Tackle, they have a bunch of guys to compete for the starting LG spot - Edoga (3rd), Ball (4th), Farniok (7th), Richards (5th), Bass (UDFA). If you include Tyler Smith, they have draft picks from the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 7th round, plus an UDFA to fill the guard spot. And this doesn't include the possibility of moving Terence Steele inside.

For crying out loud, calm down!!
You got it, brother. You'd make a better GM than most of the couch GMs on this board. ;)

Point is, he has gotten hurt every year what the last 5 years. Not to say that happens but if he does, then they start moving everybody around. Doesnt seem to work here.
The Cowboys have a top level medical facility and staff. Their trainers are good and the team knows exactly when and where money and talent cross. Not yet, so this fan will allow them to worry about when there is time for fans to become nay sayers.

I already owe the man respect.

Excellent post, Hermano!

Much better than GMO saying "he needs to go." That's not good thinking to get rid of a HOFer who's still playing at that level when he's healthy. If he is the top paid tackle then I can understand that thinking. But the dude isn't even in the top 10 highest paid tackles.
Their developmental pool of linemen is stocked with strong talent. I believe this group develops at a much higher level and standard, but at little to no cap costs for management purposes. This level is strong and if not good enough for current levels...they will be replaced where and when that is an issue.

The starters are strong and good. Let's start judging about the Philadelphia game to see how fast or close - comparison is then.

Can we stop freaking out about drafting a day 1 starter at LG? The team has shown under McCarthy they are a “best 5” OL team. This means our starters on paper will be:

Smith/Smith/Tyler B/Martin/Steele

Had the team wanted Tyler at LT and Tyron/Steele on the bench they would’ve prioritized a LG. If there’s anything this team drafts for it’s need.

You get Farniok and Chuma as your IOL depth and Waletzko as your 4th T. With multiple injuries Tyler Smith would slide out to T while Farniok/Chuma/day 3 draft pick would battle it out to be the first one in if there’s an issue on the IOL.

The key is Waletzko being the swing I think he can be and the team says he can be. If so we are fine at OL.

T’s: Smith, Smith, Steele, Wally

G’s: ZM, Smith, Chuma, Farniok, (day 3 pick)

G/C: Tyler B, Farniok

Is that not a deep OL? Again, you have to see it from the lense that Tyler Smith is starting which all signs are pointing to. With a draft pick that’s 11 OL.

Yep and they are morons.
From a previous post on topic:

2021 - OT/OG Josh Ball (4th round)
2021 - OG Matt Farniok (7th round)
2022 - OT Tyler Smith (1st round)
2022 - OT Matt Waletzko (5th round)
2022 - OC Alec Lindstrom (UDFA)
2022 - OC Brock Hoffman (UDFA)
2023 - Signed OT/OG Chuma Edoga (2019 3rd round pick of Jets)
2023 - OT/OG Asim Richard (5th round)
2023 - OT Earl Bostick, Jr. (UDFA)
2023 - OG T.J. Bass (UDFA)

That has to show complacency and being ignorant as well as no clue in developing valid talent. Of course all know that all top talent comes in the top round for 'informed' leadership...

and it doesn't matter that this is still the current start point:

Tyron Smith LT
Tyler Smith LG
Biadasz C
Martin RG
Steele RT

I firmly believe they wanted to to fill the offensive and defensive line needs in the first two rounds:
1st Round - I think it came down between Avila and Smith. I know there is an assumption that a TE could of been involved but they mentioned in the press conference- 2 big guys,

2nd Round - if Dallas had their way Avila, Bergeron or Mauch would of been the pick at 58 but all three were off the board and they pivoted to TE. I’m guessing they would of loved Mayor or LaPorta to fall but in the end it was Schoonmaker over Kraft.

Don’t think Torrence was ever up for consideration - he doesn’t offer the position flex Dallas craves

There is no question about what these guys can do fully healthy but how long can they stay healthy? So Tyler will have to kick outside and a new LG gets inserted. So the whole left side will have little exp together. Add in that biadesz like to combo block with martin he will leave the LG to fend for himself. But hey we'll have a TE who can kinda catch and kinda block

Plus Steele is coming off injury . Yes I thought an OL in top three rounds was called for . It’s not a question of who you bench it’s a question of depth . Farniok for one needs to step it up in 2023 or it’s bye ✌

Living in this world, who is the left guard then? It obviously is not Tyron, so who? Matt Farniok, maybe? Chuma Edoga, perhaps? The Cowboys have floated out the idea of Terence Steele and/or Josh Ball playing the position so maybe that wasn’t just fluff before the draft. And then there is of course the newly-drafted Richards.

The reason that this is so difficult to figure out is because of the presence of Tyron Smith. It is hard to compute the idea of him healthy and on the bench, but maybe the Cowboys feel like they are better served in the overall if he stays fresh for when truly needed. Or maybe he’ll play right tackle while Terence Steele plays left guard.

Who knows.

Myself, ignorance would be indicated if Smith's salary was ever downgraded to a backup status. That is approached in the analysis prior to the draft and not as rebound to an after thought.

LOL

If he's twice waived, does a former 3rd round pick count as some sort of coupe?

And there are 4 UDFA's on that list, if we exclude them (and assume maybe two make the practice squad) we have 10 guys left competing for likely 10 spots. Guys like Galimore, Bohanna, and Wright will fight to make the roster but no worries for twice cut Edoga and Josh Ball (Chaz Green 2.0?), they'll breeze onto the roster as long as they beat out a few UDFA's......there might be numbers but that's not meaningful depth.

Tyler Smith is a very good OL, but Our new Larry Allen?.. Come on man
Dude did you read it or interpret it your own way? As far as playing every position on the line (except center of course).

I‘m still in shock that we didn’t take Torrance. We have no depth. You can draft a guy and have him sit a year and learn. We have injury concerns that need to be addressed by having quality depth.
Honestly...go watch the Sr bowl...a 330 LB G was getting blown up by 220lb LBers. I'm glad we passed...

Spot on. The Cowboys have not lost any confidence in Tyron. He's still our best LT when he is healthy, though Tyler did a decent job filling in last year. But let's not pretend Tyler had a pro bowl season.
And let's not forget they drafted him as a guard...and looking @ our division...you better have some beef inside. Think 73 better get used to LG.
