The article doesn't make sense right from the start. Why do they need to fix next year now? They've restructured his contract every year without doing it a year ahead of time.
Yep, why give Dak/France the security of a contract before establishing whether he has the ability to take us forward.

This is a gamble as the contract will need to be lengthy and heavily backdated just to accommodate the existing prorated bonus....if we extend Dak we need to be certain we're not stuck with a 7 year veteran that's good but hasnt got the ability/pedigree to get the team past more than one play-off game at a time. (and im not particularly looking at results in 2023, just leadership peripherals and composure).

It's madness to me. I know it's really hard to find a QB like Mahomes or Burrow. But I don't believe it's that hard to find another Dak. So why pay this one 40-50M a year? It's stupid.
Honestly, I think the Jones are looking at how much they have already invested ( nearly $200M ), and as long as he's getting this team to this team to the playoffs, he's not going anywhere. But that could change if Dak and Todd France demand over $50M w/o NFCCG this season. In other words, this is the ultimate crossroad season for Dak. Getting this team to the NFCCG means he probably writes his own numbers but if not things become unpredictable IMO. BTW.......his current market value is interesting. I'm pretty sure Stephens would offer these numbers right now but no way in hell Dak would sign for under $45M

Question on franchise tag contract. We all know dak has a no franchise tag clause but is there wiggle room there. Is the contract done before the franchise deadline or after?

Right. But they already restructured his contract for this year. Extending him now would be redundant. Which is why I don't think he's getting an extension this year. He'll get one next year.
This IMO is saying more than fan realizes ..........it was a chance for both sides to secure his future here for another 5-7 years of new money but they didn't. Wonder why.........

The tag is out of the question.......not an option.

Spot on. Dak/France are sitting there saying, we'll play through 2023 thank you and then in 2024 you're paying us CASH of $34m so we'll take that and then we'll hit Free Agency in 2025 when: Lawrence, Burrows, Tua, Herbert will explode the market.....the alternative is you pay us now and that will break the current market.
The only alternative other than vastly overpaying is to make him earn it (or at least see what he can do in 2023 and make the decision on his abilities), there is the option to Post June cut in 2024 and save $34m CAP (and use the good draft).

Sorry, but I don’t agree with Florio’s take at all. But it’s not surprising as his ‘pro-player’ stance is well established.

Dak has to earn more money in an extension. Because he hasn’t earned the amounts he’s been getting the past several years.

I’d rather cut the cord and take $60 million in lumps for past mistakes than to compound it to $200 million for a guy who’s shown to not be worth it.

Don’t compound one mistake with another.
So, go full rebuild? That’s what it sounds like you’re saying. Does that include trading Diggs, Lamb and Micah?

I did answer. Pursue a better option and move on when you find it.
What does that mean?

Please define, with some examples, of “pursue a better option”

Is it drafting a QB at the end of the first round every year until you “find it”?

I honestly don’t see what else it could mean other than picking up some other teams cast off and hoping for different results than that team did.

NOPE, you bring in a rookie QB (or even a middling/good cheaper Vet) and use the $34m CAP saving next year to secure those ^^^^ contracts. Same basis as Dak had in 2016, the comfort of starting in a more talented team.

The option is, carry on the same using hope as the strategy (and accepting we'll be relevant most seasons) or refocus based on a good roster and a younger QB (ala Dak in 2016).

There isnt a right or wrong, but we seem to be in a loop based on hope, a hope that's soon going to be really expensive (due to paying off the prorated debts of the last contract).

Yes, or you use draft capital to draft up (2024 appears to be that option). We'll need to do it as some point, and in 2024 the $34m CAP saving to secure our FA's and actually look to more than JAG's to fill out the roster.

It's as conceivable as Dak improving .....and is why some of us want some proof that Dak can step up.

Sure I do, you don't start seven years in this league w/o being pretty good........no, he's not elite but much better than you are willing to admit.
Dak is good until you need him to be good.

He is big and strong and talented but caves under pressure which is the true measure of a QB . . . There have been too many critical situations where he has failed and or put a strain on the defense.

You can actually see in his eyes when he is panicking . . . He has not been able to shake it or adjust He shrinks under the pressure

I am excited about this year but I am very leary of Dak besides RB "The 40 Million Dollar Man" is my biggest Question Mark

I have high hopes and I am very excited for this up coming season. The schedule appears to be strong and we will need Dak to win Home Field Advantage for us lets see what happens

Extension my arse......this dimwitted duo should bite the bullet and let Dak's contract ride and then cut him first chance they get to save money. They created this short sighted blunder and put the gun to their own head.....so they should deal with it. Cooper can keep the seat warm until they can find a proper replacement. Yeah, he won't take Dallas to the NFCCG, but neither will this guy. You don't double down on a bad bet.

There's just no better alternative currently available. I don't foresee the Cowboys having a bad enough record to land either Williams or Maye next year.

Dak is our QB for the foreseeable future at this point.

I'm so tired of people saying why didn't they sign him back in 2018-19. They offered him ungodly sums of money for a guy who, quite frankly, wasn't NEARLY as polished as he is now. That's another thing conveniently forgotten. Dak wasn't that great back in 2018. He was the only guy we had, but he wasn't a superstar.
It was clear Dak was getting a 2nd deal. Any amount they would have offered in 2018 would have been far far less than what he will be getting with his new deal.

Signing him to an unreasonable deal back then would have been much cheaper in the long run. Offer him the highest paid QB in the league and he wouldn't have turned it down. How could he?

Franchising him has proven to be very costly and it's only going to be worse eventually. UGH!
