Also a roster spot frees up when Mike White moves up to QB2 and Cooper Rush gets bounced.

Even if that happens it doesn’t necessarily mean that a roster spot opens up. They carried three QB’s last year, they could do the same this year, just replacing Rush with someone else.

Strong words from JG.......mighty strong

Is this a joke? Somehow Abdul-Jabbar’s performance in another sport at age 37 and as a starter is supposed to shed light on what we might expect from Witten at age 37 in a part-time role and after a year off? Because Garrett thinks Witten’s Y-option route is as unstoppable as Kareem’s skyhook?

Huh. Thanks for the contribution Jon Machota.

"Depth" is $1 million , not $5 million. Or even the $3.5 million that other people are reporting.

It's the whole Sean Lee, Allen Hurns, Tyrone Crawford mess all over again. Paying good money to guys who don't earn it on the field.
If he contributes what he does on average? Then he will be worth the 3.5million.

Just a hunch. I think signing Witten means they are not really planning on changing the offense. It will be more of the same.
I never thought they were changing the offense anyway. It's JG's offense. It's not changing until he's gone.

My biggest worry about Witten coming back was the team giving him is old role back. The man ran 97% of the snaps the last season he played. We can all agree he’s too slow now to be that guy. The only way I would be cool with him on the team would be in a redzone, run-blocking, 3rd down role. Well it looks like that’s whats going to happen..

This would be unlike the typical homer FO move if we actually made him the niche player he should be. And predictability isn’t an issue with Witten because he’s the classic “know what’s coming can’t stop it guy”. Just not at a 97% snap count rate. I know approve of this move by the FO.

What about y’all?

He will be on the field every snap he is able to. That's what happened when he was here before. If he's that "valuable" he will be playing every snap. To let him play less than that is to admit he's not really that good anymore. Plus Garrett doesn't have the stones to sit him down. Get ready for the circus. It's coming back to town

The money is a bit too high for a niche player.

That being said. I’m not too upset about a player being overpaid during a season when the cowboys have a ton of cap space and paying Witten 5 mil for one year will have no effect on their ability to sign people.

That being said, if the FO tries to sell Witten returning as a major acquisition and using it as an excuse to not be aggressive in FA. Then I’ll be pissed.

Don't worry. He's an every down player. We may have him playing DE too. I mean if you can just pretend he can play why not let him rush the QB too?

base the offense on one aging guy back for one season and planning to play about 40% of the snaps.

That is the point. Bringing in Witten is not innovating. They are telling you 40% of the snaps are going to be the same old offense. We will see but I don't see the addition of Witten as part of a new and improved offense. Most likely it will be check down city.

He’s still a better blocker, receiver, route runner than any TE on the team.
So he’s slower....great! Play Witten and Jarwin together. No LB can cover Witten, and Jarwin will have room to run the seam routes.

You can’t always be young at every position. This is the kind of vet leadership and short yardage/red zone move that winning teams make.

My goodness. You guys haven't seen Witten play in years. He has been a horrible blocker for several years. If he can still block he must be lazy as hell because he hasn't displayed blocking ability in years.

Speed isn't everything. He averaged 9 yards a catch and in a world of curl routes that's pretty good. Maybe Moore will ask him and all tight ends to run varying routes.

Love Jason's catches in the redzone just hope he doesn't get manhandled when it comes to blocking like he did in his last year....just got manhandled.

If Frederick could get open as Witten does then we would move him to TE but since he can't we won't. Speed has never been an overall trade mark of Witten, people keep talking speed but the fact is the man knows how to get open. Teams have used CB, LB and safeties and yet Witten still manages to get open and make the catch. His 8.9 per catch in 2017 shows he is more than a 4 yard guy as one genius around here claimed.

I agree. People keep saying his yards per catch was low but they really weren't. Witten topped at about 10 yards per catch and ended at the 8.9 you said. His option routes and use of his body to shield defenders was textbook. I'll add that Moore needs to find ways to get jsrwin involved more as well and vary their routes/ responsibilities.
