Money shouldn't be a factor since Cooper is only guaranteed his 2021 salary of $20 million and then can be released after the season with a $6 million cap hit and Lamb has 3 years left on his rookie deal at under $4 million avg a year.
Of course it's all dependent on whether Cooper balls out this year and then Jerry would likely pick up his '22 salary of $20 million which is guaranteed at the beginning of the 22 calendar season in April.
If that happens, it may not be feasible to have that much invested in the receiver corp.
Gallup is a top end # 2 receiver and likely deserves a $10 - 12 million p/yr range.
It all depends on what happens this year. Unfortunately with a salary cap you can’t keep everyone you want to keep.

I love Gallup as a 2nd or 3rd receiver. But I don't expect the Cowboys to sign most of their 2022 free agents. They are a projected $24 million over the CAP in 2022 assuming the CAP is set to the maximum agreed to by the league and NFLPA. Yes, they can restructure Cooper and pay him bonus instead of salary to reduce his CAP value but that is not going to save them much unless they also extend Cooper so they can spread the restructure out over more years. I think that would be a mistake.

Poor CAP management has hurt this team for a long time. They got into CAP jail with Romo's contract, got out of it when Romo retired after absorbing a huge CAP hit, but then they put themselves right back in CAP jail by giving Zeke, Lawrence and Jaylon Smith stupid contracts. This year they gave Dak $40 million which is going to haunt them in 2 years. I am sure they will get under the CAP every year as they have in the past, but if anyone thinks it will not be at the expense of losing good players they are in for a rude awakening.

Gallup will be one of those players. I would be happy to be wrong, but with Cooper and Lamb on the team, and all the UDFA WRs they signed, the writing is on the wall for Gallup.

You do realize that the cap is something like $20m short of where it was projected to be this year right?

Any cap issues the Cowboys have today are 100% related to COVID. They were in great shape.

NFL Network's Taylor Bisciotti reported the following offers:

Kansas City Chiefs offered $8 million, with another $3 million in incentives.

The Ravens offered $9 million, with another $4 million in incentives.

He turned down deals up to 13mil to stay with Pitt.
Also, last year was a weird time for some as teams were in a cap crunch and had to get creative.

Also, Juju had been dealing with a knee injury, which supposedly had to drained quite a few times last year.

Per the source, the knee injury that'd nagged JuJu throughout the season flared up in the later part of the schedule, causing him to miss practices -- he sat out two in the week leading up to the playoff game against the Browns -- and causing him to have that knee drained of fluid frequently to allow him to compete in games. Most often, that draining would occur on Fridays of game weeks.

Cry baby. His knee looked fine as he danced on logs all season.

...just so long as Cooper is not facing a Ramsey, Gilmore, Slay, Lattimore, or other top tier coverage CBs.

I will take my chance with Cooper. I like Gallup but he is not as good as Cooper, he has more drops than Cooper and does not have the speed nor does he have the rout running ability of Cooper

The only problem I see is that another team will pay Gallup more.

Right, cause we replaced Beasley so easily right?
Very easily. Randall Cobb then Ceedee Lamb. WR3 might be the easiest position to refill to be honest.

Cobb 2019: 55 catches, 828 yards, 15.1 avg, 3 TD’s

Beasley 2019: 67 catches, 778 yards, 11.6 avg, 6 TD’s

Lamb 2020: 74 catches, 935 yards, 12.6 avg, 5 TD’s

Beasley 2020: 82 catches, 967 yards, 11.8 avg, 4 TD’s

Also Beasley is one of the top slots in the league he’s definitely a good player, but his importance was heightened here because for his last two seasons there was no number1 WR until Cooper was brought in. Remember Bease was getting bracket coverage as he was the de facto 1 and he wasn’t able to be nearly as impactful.

I say all that for the point that a slot like Bease and Juju are marginally effective if there’s no real WR1. As long as we have one of those we shouldn’t feel bad at all about letting role specific WR’s move on. If there’s one thing we invest in plentifully its WR.

Cooper would be truly great if he could be relied upon from one game to the next. It's fair to say he's legitimately limited in that aspect.

On the other hand, Michael Gallup is reliable from one game to the next but his overall skills simply don't match up with Amari Cooper.

Based largely upon those considerations, it's something of a tossup deciding who to keep and who to finally decide to send elsewhere.

Your idea of easily is fail. Cobb was only here for a year and we spent a 1st round pick on Lamb, when everybody knows we really needed to be focusing on Defense. That's not an easy fix, by any means. Thats not my idea of a fix. That's my idea of a screw up, to be honest. We shouldn't have to be spending first round picks on a slot WR but I suppose everybody looks at things differently.

Cobb being gone after a year doesn’t diminish his replacing of Bease, he just priced himself out of another deal. Good on him for playing well.

Lamb is much much more than a slot WR and ignoring that would be obtuse. He not only can move all around unlike Beasley but he gives the team options financially in terms of a #1 WR. Remember in my earlier message I emphasized how that’s the most important WR, not the specialist. Ceedee can be a 1, Beasley the specialist cannot. Thus he’s much more of an upgrade than the replacement Cobb was.

As for him being picked in round 1, I’m still confused as to how fans are still questioning this. Not only could he be the starting #1 soon, but there literally was no other defensive player on theta part of the board that would be a better pick than Lamb. Please tell me who you would’ve wanted to draft? CJ Henderson and AJ Terrell the CB’s were gone and the next CB on our board was Diggs who we got anyways. K’lavon Chaisson is the DE who would’ve been the only defender that made sense. He ended up with a poor rookie year and was a traits guy who people said had a high ceiling, in other words a project. We will see if he becomes the player Lamb is.

This isn’t even mentioning the importance of a passing game in today’s league and the good possibility we selected the best WR in the draft who will most likely be a multi-time pro-bowler. Or the fact that you take a certified blue-chip prospect over a project 10 times outta 10 no matter what side of the ball it’s on.

Yes, it absolutely does. That's called stop gap, that's not called replacement. Lamb may be more then a slot WR but I wasn't the one who called him that so that's really not a point to me, for me. That should be addressed with whomever classified him as such. BTW, there is no proof, at this point that he can be anything more either. He hasn't done that in the NFL as yet. His limitations, coming out, were his size. He's thin for a WR in the NFL so until he puts on enough weight or muscle, he's likely going to be a slot guy or possibly spend time injured.

You don't get the whole number 1 thing because you aren't paying attention to what is being said. See, nobody is questioning him being taken in the first round. What's being questioned is why, when we obviously need help in other areas, are we spending a #1 pick on a slot WR guy. That's what's being questioned and that's a valid question. If you don't understand that, then I can't help you because it means that you don't want to understand it. I'm sure that's not the case here so I will simply say that it's not that I don't like Lamb. I just don't view the approach as success. You shouldn't have to go out and spend a #1 pick on a WR at all. We should have managed the situation better so that we were able to draft somebody who could play the slot with a lower pick, signed Gallup and Coop and been good. Instead, we spent a 1st on another WR which might force us to have to move one of the other guys. That's not fixing the problem. That's creating a problem and at the end of the day, if Lamb does beomce a number one or two, we still have a whole in the slot so Beasley is still not replaced.

That's a fail.

Maybe. I wouldn't be shocked if someone paid him like a 1B - a team like Miami or Carolina.

yep or if some team that thinks it’s a contender wants an experienced guy. KC overpaid a few years ago

There are a lot of different schools of thought on this receiver situation, and quite frankly there are merits to each perspective.

Amari—Dominant receiver who looks like a top 5 pick, at times. On the other hand he is hurt a lot, disappears at times (usually when it counts) and is paid a lot. If you look at the second sentence you can see why the Raiders chose to flip him for a pick. Which Amari do you want to focus on/project going forward? They are both right, in some respect. But Amari IS expensive. So that has to be factored in to the team’s thinking about Amari going forward.

CeeDee—Looks the part as a draft pick. Seems worthy of the pick, he’s cheap labor for the time being. But his performance so far, must be viewed through the lens that he has a really strong group of receivers around him and what many consider to be a top 5 RB. Can he be the bell cow? Maybe so. We can project one way or the other but we can’t know for sure until that situation arises.

Gallup—Worthy of his draft stock. Solid player. But he hasn’t set the world on fire. One might argue his stats would be higher if he was the guy. One might also argue he has been afforded the luxury of often drawing a #3 or #4 corner a lot of his career. He’s a good receiver. But do you pay him top 20 money to keep him? I could make the argument either way, but I can’t fault the Cowboys if they choose not to based on what we have seen so far.

Davonta Parker from Miami is probably a better receiver than Gallup and he resigned relatively cheap. I would trade Gallup straight across for Parker and I like Gallup.

No matter how the Cowboys decide to play this I can see arguments for and against any decision the Cowboys will ultimately make. It’s too bad we don’t have a crystal ball. Don’t ever sleep on the salary cap implications in decision making. It will be a substantial factor.

Without a salary cap it is highly likely that Gallup would be resigned by the Cowboys.

watch many games? , easy example game 1 last year Jalen ramsey on who?? Gallup caught a 40 yard pass on him and got lame call that called that back and we lost the game over it..he beat JS 1 on 1 arguably top 1-3 CB in the league in game on the line situation and caught it!! he makes tough catches no matter whos on him..sure hes not elite #1 but a very slid 1 he can be..
Bears wished thy had guy as 1 let alone a 3 in Gallup..wasnt a few of those last drive to set up the GW FG all Gallup against ny the game dak got hurt and those were from Dalton!!

ACs age and dollars and some injury issues say hes the odd ma out..ill wait and see lie i hpe Jones does and let that be worked out in the field this year..
