Does any team draft better than Dallas?

Yeah, I think you can look at it as having four corner stones:
1. Coaching
2. Free Agency
3. Drafting
4. Trading

If you look at it the big picture we nailed 1/4 of those in the Garrett era. That’s not going to build success.

Since McCarthy if you give him a mulligan for his first year of coaching we’ve probably nailed 4/4. The thing is you need to do it for 5 straight years to be a real contender with rare exceptions.

Nice job. I like your cornerstones here.
The big picture triangle to overall NFL success is in having a consistently excellent to outstanding GM, HC and QB1.

The debate continues on these 3 titleholders here.

If we are so awesome at drafting, then why do we keep losing in the playoffs because we can't stop the run?

Drafting well is more than just taking some good players. There is a ton more to it than that.

Now, if we'd have taken Alim McNeil instead of thug Joseph, then you could start bragging. We beat Frisco in the playoffs w/ just that one little move. The player was there, he was not a secret, the need was there, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Jerry's got to take him some weird project CB. Frustration.

Some are really in a hurry to give Jerry credit.

100% . It takes smart decisions in every facet. It’s not just about 3 days in April. I feel this team is very close and 2023 we will see a major uptick in activity.

Why not?
I've been watching them through thick and thin.
They are my favorite team.
I don’t know. I mean you said that they’ll never be successful again as long as the Jones are around so just wondering.

That's pretty much the consensus of 98% of everyone in this forum and most likely true.
Success meaning Super Bowl championships.

I keep trying to deny it, but then they keep shoving it right back in my face.

The question I remember is someone saying name 3 and he went way beyond that.

Fact is that they only won RINGS because they LEFT DALLAS.

Don't like that FACT?

Too bad.

Drafting very well is a cornerstone of a championship team.

Doing well in FA is another; we have not shown to be all that good there.

and then there is the FO and Coaching. nuff said.

Those crowing about drafting well are the same types that think participation trophies mean something.

I grew up with Tom Landry and the teams that were fighting to make it to the SB just about EVERY YEAR.

27 years since we got to the SB and the same time since we even SNIFFED a SB.

Until we are in the NFC Championship game BECAUSE we deserved to be there, I see nothing to really feel all that great about.
You want to give someone credit for tagging along for a championship? Be my guest. Nobody says the Chiefs don’t win a ring without Hitchens or Mo lol. Calm down lol.

I disagree.. Hitchens and Wilson were starting LBs for KC in their championship year. Amendola averaged 9 catches and 116 yards for the Pats in the playoffs during their 2017 Super Bowl year.. He was never "great" but I would stop well short of declaring him as "just along for the ride." He was a good player.. Not everybody can be a Hall of Famer.. This aint basketball..
Those players weren’t good. Not even serviceable. Wilson was a good back up.

Dallas roster is mostly made up of their own draft picks. Not simply mediocre players but players that are playing well. What teams draft better?
Kansas city. They draft well. Trade well. Evaluate talent well. Won the super bowl and afc championships. I hate every aspect of the chiefs, but you can't deny their formula for success.

According to Cowturd the Seahawks drafted 6 all- pros this past draft and Kiper thinks we stink. If you have been on draft zone or YouTube our first round picks since Zeke sucked. So you tell me.

I haven’t really read through this thread but Dallas absolutely is probably the best drafting team in the league. The homegrown talent they have is impressive. They do well with UDFA’s as well.

Do I wish they’d add a high profile free agent from time to time? Yeah, sometimes. Not the older guys but a young, good player would be nice to add to their drafts sometimes.

I’ll say this: they have done well finding some lower priced FA’s that really contribute like Fowler, Kearse, etc. And I’d MUCH rather have Fowler at 1.5M than Von Miller at 6 years / $120M. It is just so much smarter.

I do occasionally want one of the higher priced FA’s… but I get what they’re doing, and because they’re so good with the draft they’re one of the most talented rosters and are absolutely a contender.

It is sustainable and gives the team a lot of flexibility.

Dallas drafts well

Not sure about "the best" but compared to most teams they do well.

I usually think of the Ravens as the best though not sure that has been true lately (would have to check)

Having Reid and Mahomes helps

But yeah, I loved how they re-stocked their o-line seemingly overnight

Yeah, Mahomes and Reid is just a deadly combo. They could make just about any team into a contender.

Reid, especially, changes everything. IMO, Andy is the best offensive coach in the league. He’s phenomenal. Mahomes is really good, but he wouldn’t be as good as he is without Reid, who makes him great.

Dallas' drafting success turned the corner when Bill Parcels arrived in 2003. He taught the front office and scouts what to look for in drafting players. That has yet to leave this organization these past 19 years.

Are they perfect? Of course not. The draft is still a crap shoot. However, when 14 of your last 19 1st round picks have been selected to at least 1 Pro Bowl (where the Cowboys run away with every other team in the NFL), it tells me that this organization has this facet of team building down pretty good.

The blame for the Cowboys not winning a Super Bowl in over a quarter century must go somewhere else. Drafting certainly is NOT the problem.
