Payton has come a long way since his OC playing calling duties were taken away from him by Fassel when he was with the Giants back in 2001. Maybe Garret can do the same. Doubt it but there is always hope.

Makes no sense to pay the 25 mil left on Garrett's contract to only dish out another 30 million plus to bring in another coach. I don't see our FO spending nearly 50 million for the HC spot.

I does if you're getting really old and your staring QB's window is closing. Jones has plenty of money and you can't take it with you. I guess he could stick with Jason (.500) Garrett for the rest of his life.

I think the Giants may make a run at him. Give him Eli, OBJ and Cruz along with the NY market it might be hard to pass up.

I hope it doesn't happen.

Jerry won't. But he should.

That's it in a nutshell.

I'm wondering what's up with the title 'Hard push for Payton. Romo's only hope?'

What is the infatuation with Romo and a ring? I get it that Romo has played well for most of his career. Does the team somehow owe Romo anything? Are the other 52 players playing for a 'Ring for Tony' or are they playing for a championship for themselves and their teammates. Does Jerry owe Romo anything other than the $100-130M he has paid/will pay him? What about the other players? Romo does not trump the team. My take is that this thinking is detrimental to the team. Romo has been paid very, very well. He has been numerous times part of a team that had a window of opportunity. Two or three times he got hurt. I get it that injuries are part of the game, but you have to find a way to stay healthy, too. This was a good team this year with a good chance and he got hurt. It isn't like Romo has had to play with a bare cupboard. He's had good players to work with generally.

I don't get where people think Romo is entitled to a ring or something. No one owes Romo anything. If Romo wants a ring, he needs to go out there and earn a ring as part of the team. I just don't understand this mentality that we have to keep doing this or getting this player or getting this coach so Romo can get his ring.

Why not? He didnt mind when they took Garretts play calling duties away and gave them first to Callahan and then to Linehan. I'm pretty sure he can survive without him.

Well with Payton in, that means Garrett is out, and he, Romo, and Witten are all best buds. I'm not convinced Tony buys off on that, Witten either as that would probably mean a reduced role and he's not going to go for that.

I see many issues against a Garrett removal.

I think the whole kit and kaboodle sink slowly into a 9-7 8-8 7-9 quagmire for a couple of more years.

He won't take it, he'll pass it down to his family. I just don't get the contention that signing Payton suddenly guarantees us a SB win.

Romo is a M.A.S.H. unit thanks in part to our ineptitude in the front office. We owe him a ring. That's my take.

Oh boy, another Romo hater pops out of the woodwork. Tell me, is there some scenario in the fantasy world you live in where Romo gets a ring and no one else gets one, the team doesn't get a Lombardi, and the city doesn't get to celebrate a championship? If not, what exactly is the downside of "trying to get Romo a ring", as if it doesn't perfectly coincide with the goals of the team?

Romo must have a really, really bad OL. The inept front office only gave him Tyron Smith, Fredbeard, Leary, Collins, Martin, Free, Bern, etc. to protect him.

Maybe years previously, but not recently in my opinion.

Getting those guys doesn't erase the beatdown he took in years prior.

I look at the overall breadth. Not just the past year or two.

It doesn't but an upgrade in coaching elevates the whole team, IMO this team sorely lacks in personal accountability. You know Jimmy was never afraid to call out a player individually and publicly about their performance and the players knew this and feared this. In today's NFL you have to hold your players accountable but I see and hear too many times where JG will speak in general when asked about a player who played poorly instead of just telling the truth. He'll say something like "John would be the first to tell you that he needs to improve on his play" it's like he doesn't want to hurt the players feelings or something. If you want to know about accountability just Google Bruce Arians and accountability and see what you come up with, he's changing the culture in Arizona and it shows.

Excellent post but the second #2 somewhat bothers me. The performance of the players might remain lackluster. Coaching decisions may continue being questionable. The general manager could consider trying out Rowdy for quarterback depth. Some fans might develop disinterest for whatever reason. My question is why would someone remain a fan of any team if the team no longer held any interest for them? I understand frustration, anger, belligerence, etc., any fan may have for the team not performing as expected. The emotions validate continued interest in the team. However why would someone remain interested in a team if the team nurtures apathy within them? That seems like false self-representation to me.

The same reason why a parent won't give up on a child even though that child - now an adult - may be a drug addict or a drug dealer or choose to live a questionable life.

There's a loyalty/love that remains regardless of the state of the individual. And while that love/loyalty remains, you just cannot bear to continue to actively care because you've been hurt too much and that person isn't going to change. So you prepare yourself for the worst by guarding your emotions and becoming disinterested.

That's the best way I can explain it.

I don't need to google accountability. My post has nothing to do with accountability. You're adding on to the topic that I originally posted regarding our FO spending 50+ million on two coaches. How's that environment in NO today? The same NO teams that's fighting for last place in their division like we are with their starting QB.

Somehow he is supposed to come right in and make us SB winners? There are no guarantees in the NFL and the only certainty in the NFL is its uncertainty. No coach has won with two different teams and somehow Payton will be the one to make history??

Point is we're stuck with Garrett next season whether we like it or not. This isn't an endorsement for Garrett to stay either.

He may just stay in NO. Brees isn't retiring. A decent draft & they'll be ok.

he may not want to leave.
