Seems to me that the Cowboys wasted a lot of time (coaching time especially) this offseason on a 4th year dude that shows very little promise of being a quality backup let alone a legit starting NFL QB.
I don't think it was wasted. I think it was imperative to see what we had with Lance. Lance's contract was guaranteed for this year so he was going to be on the team this season no matter what. What we found was that we also needed Rush because Lance is not (at least not yet) an NFL QB. I don't think we re-sign him next season unless he wants to sign for the vet minimum to be the #3, but with Jerry and his inability to admit to making a mistake, who knows.

No one should mind keeping Lance for developmental purposes but not at his 1st round price tag. Backup type money only and that's being generous. He should go play in the UFL for a season. He's getting paid almost 3x as much as Rush and couldn't get close to bumping him out of the backup spot. No bueno...
The UFL is not a NFL farm system. He will sign with Dallas or as a FA with another team.
Only way he plays in the UFL is by choice by refusing an NFL contract. If a FA he will not be one for very long.

If Dak doesn't get extended by the start of the season, I think this is a very temporary situation.
I look for the Cowboys to find ways to play Lance by mid season or even earlier so that they know whether or not he is a viable alternative to Dak.
They already know. You know by year 4.

I get it but I think if he actually played real football, there is a chance he could actually improve. He needs more than pre-season football and practice, it was obvious.

If they carry three QBs on game day, you can almost bet they’ll use Lance as a situational QB. They probably have a few plays designed where he can use his legs, giving him the option to throw or run. The one thing he did well in preseason was run. He had 160 yards rushing.

What about year 8, going into 9?
You know well before then as well. By year 4 you know what you have. Some teams know after a year. Cardinals knew that Rosen wasn’t it.

Some times you know and don’t like what you see but you know.

In relation to Dak….it took one season to know what Dak was.

I’d like to see us have a package for short yardage using Lance. The threat of running or throwing will keep the defense guessing.

Good chance they’ll use him for a play or two if they have three QBs on game day. It would be a way to get him on the field to continue to develop him.

Ah, the mythical year 4 mantra. Which is not a true 4 years of actual on the field experience.
But hey you all need that as part of your narrative to make it more legit. Which is far from it.

He loved Quincy Carter and Jonny Football too...shows how great he wasal at evaluating QBs.
While I agree with you I wonder was it the drugs or what with Quincy. Or if he simply couldn’t play. He robbed himself of another year with this coaching staff.

So you’re saying if this was a WR, DT, or LB with physical abilities that caused him to be drafted in the top 5 and we took a flyer on him for a 4th rounder while on his rookie contract it would be a mistake? Nope. That’s a good risk to take.

The fact you reacted so strongly when Dak is mentioned is an indicator it’s all about Dak. Everything involving this team has taken on this weird Dak filter and is viewed on how it affects Dak. It’s weird.
You obviously don't understand the QB position. It is not about physical abilities.

Since when do the best athletes play QB?

Do you rotate or play more than 1 WR, DT or LB?

The QB position is different, not even a close comparison.

It’s not a myth. I’m not saying you know how good a guy is at year 4…I’m saying you know what you have. We don’t know how good Bryce Young can be. But better believe Panthers know by now know what he is.

It’s not some 8 year audition.

He would not even make it past waivers, or last a second. Multiple teams would claim him.
Most likely, but he would still get regulated to 3rd QB on all but a few teams that have really bad qb situations... in which he might be the backup. So, clearing waivers isn't saying much.

This has to be a real blow to the Trey Lance lovers that were trying to convince themselves he was the best QB on our roster. Go back and look at some of the posts. Even his last preseason performance with 5 INT’s hasn’t deterred some. There’s fans that are still convinced he’s our future. Lol

Lance was Dak-cope. You know that I don't think Dak is worth the money but I also wasn't counting on Lance to be the savior. I had to see it and what I saw was scary. Reminded me of the Quincy Carter horror's.
