don't get me wrong - i want to keep barber also. but like you say, if another team falls in love and wants him more than we either do or put value on him - who's going to *really* know him better?

poison pill aside, if another teams ponies up more than we feel he's worth, we still have the option to sign or match.

we've really lost nothing in this move except the potential of a 3rd rounder to go with the 1st.

if i'm missing what else we've lost, i'd love to hear it.

I think what worries people is that with the 1st round tender we'll be seeing more interest for Barber than if it had been the 1st and 3rd tender. You're right though, we lose only the third by going with the lower tender, but I think it also increases our chance of losing Barber.

...or I guess you could also just say it increases our chance of having three 1st round picks ::shrugs::

He just said we are linked to moss and that you could look for Miami to sign barber. Right. They will give up the 1st pick in the draft. Right.

Then he just said we are also interested in Alan Faneca.

Where do they find these people. 90% of this board has more Football IQ than the people on espn.

I cant believe how bad that guy just was.

also, why is no one talking about new orleans. they have one of the best offenses in the league and 30 million dollars in cap space. Shouldnt they be the team linked to all the defensive free agents.

I've seen rumors that the Saints have a deal in place already for Asante Samuel.

Dude. Barber has intagibles in the locker room. He brings the intangibles of being the guy that the team leans on for energy in games. Only romo and ware get more cheers when they come out of the locker room to warmup.

You cant measure the stuff he brings outside of stats, just like romo and ware.

Not that I buy either one of those rumors, but I would rather have Faneca than Moss. The receivers were getting open against the Giants, but Romo did not have time to get them the ball in the second half. If the line blocked just a little better in that second half I think Dallas wins that game.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Cowboys will give Barber a first-round tender at $2.017 million, which would net them a first-round pick if he goes to another team, rather than the high tender of $2.56 million, which would have returned a first- and third-round pick.

Hmmm, pick up a 3rd first rounder if someone signs Barber, package two of the 1st rounders to get McFadden and still have a #1 for a CB? Then trade a 5th for Javon Walker or sign FA Donte Stallworth? Very interesting.....

We have less than 10 mil left in our cap. That's not counting any other tags or signings we need (but it IS counting the rookies).

We can EASILY be out priced by an offer from those teams with 20+ mil free. There are 8 or so right now who have the chance.

The Cowboys do not have any cap problems and can make simple moves to create more space if needed.

• All he does is fight for every last inch of the field
• All he does is inject explosiveness in our offense
• All he does is score TD's

I say he is very valuable and irreplaceable.

exactly. but people just get upset and don't think through things. the 3rd round pick isn't gonna make or break any deal at this point so why make it an issue?

1. we can match any offer that comes in.
2. we can decide it's too much and go elsewhere and take our compensation.

At which point, the Boys could make a serious pitch for Michael Turner, then still draft a running back in the 2nd round, or alternatively, sign a lesser back like Tatum Bell (who would be a solid kick returner for them too), and see what you can do with your pile of draft picks to get up high enough to draft McFadden...

I don't entirely understand what Jerry's doing here, but I see a coupla viable fallback options in which the Boys wind up with an improved running game next season... of course, there's no reason they can't have an improved running game if they keep Barber and draft a running back in the 2nd round, either...

So though I'm curious about what's up here, I'm not near as worried about it as I am the whole Flozell Adams thing...

which is why i agree - i want to keep him for his heart and his attitude. he's also a fan favorite because of these two things. however, my point is to all the people here whining that jones is a fool and a moron and how dare he do such a thing.

with what jones did he only risked a 3rd round pick. will that alone make him more attractive to a rb starved team? maybe, but i doubt it. if you want barber bad enough to lose your 1st round pick, the 3rd i'd say would be *not* a deal breaker.

That's what's most puzzling about all this, Jerry knows there's a market out there for Barber... making him easier to steal for a crummy 500k doesn't make sense at this point... perhaps in the near future, the plan will become clearer...

Let's assume the Pats sign Marion Barber III.

Since they don't have their own first round pick, would they have to give up the one they own from the Niners?

I was under the impression (thinking) that you'd have to give up your own first rounder and not one acquired from another team. Or would that prevent the Pats from picking up Barber because they don't own a first-round pick of their own?

This would be the same for the Niners since they own Indy's first round pick.


As for which teams could take Barber?

You don't think Philly wouldn't want to put a wrench in Dallas' plans? The Panthers need a back to complement DeAngelo Williams. Seattle? Tampa?
Chicago (but they're too high in the draft)? Detroit?

There are a few teams that could pull the trigger.
