There has to be more to the timing of this restructure. Hardy is not due his money yet and maybe it was the McClain contract, but I think they still had room for that and the rookie pool as well. They will get even more room when Dez signs his deal . There is no benefit this year to cutting Carr, it would only save you money next year, so he really needs a restructure and pay cut for it to make sense for this year.

So really why do you want to free up 8+ million now as opposed to months from now? just because it's inevitable or you are planning ahead for next year? i doubt it.

No. We were out of current cap space with the signing of McClain. We needed to clear room now for that.

We technically didn't have to clear room for either the draft picks or Hardy yet, so that money could be used for something else, but a restructure was necessary now to fit in McClain. The fact that Dallas eventually was going to have to restructure Romo for Hardy's contract just made it the logical move.

The rest of that money could be used for AP, but we would then have to make other moves to fit in Hardy's money.

Oh, absolutely, but I can't see Minnesota letting him go for a 7th and Peterson is on the record saying he wants his money. I don't think there's any way Peterson will sign a one-year deal and I don't think he'll play for $6M a year and modest guarantees.

You may as well fantasize about him coming here for the vet minimum. $6M/year is a fairy tale.

The money was needed for Hardy's contract. Try and keep up.

Lol no it wasn't . He only counts 3 million against the cap , and the rest is incentive based (won't have to be paid until the seasons over) Hardy isn't even guaranteed a thing . What are you talking about ?

IMO, they were holding out to see if they could work out a long term deal with Dez with a 1st year at a low cap hit.

Choices. I think they believe Brees' best days are behind him so they don't want to push his money forward.

I agree. Brees has a cap hit of $26.4 million this year. If they cut him they would have a $33.55 million dead money hit. Brees will have a $27.4 million cap hit next season if he is with the Saints. He will cost the Saints $7.4 million in dead money if they cut him next year. I think that is a possibility.

Wasn't there a lengthy debate last week abut how Hardy's incentives hit the cap as they're earned this season?

It has to be paid as the season rolls along. 500k+ has to be AVAILABLE on the books for EACH week Hardy plays. It's not a "bill due at the end of the season" situation. Again, try and keep up

Hardys game bonuses have to be accounted for every week he plays. If he's suspended 4 games, you have to be prepared to pay his per game hit 12 times consecutively. They have to have that money or they willl be forced to make moves in season to account for his weekly pay.

He is paid by the game. His cap hit is set @3.2 million already. Anything above that is an incentive. Which is basically a bonus check.

Well in either case, AP is never really off the table and now Dallas has more money to use on draft day instead of after June 1st. This just opens up the draft day trade scenario's a bit more.

One thing that was mentioned was that since AP did not play last year, he could fit into a Hardy type deal with all the NLTBE incentives hitting during the year if he was open to it.

Seems like the next logical options to free up cash would be Carr post June 1st cut, Claiborne trade and Dez long term deal.

I'm a bit surprised...but not totally.

It may say at least a little about what they think of Romo's health going forward (cautiously optimistic)

I think this also shows that the team was not going give Murray what he was asking no matter what the cap situation was.
Those pointing the finger at Romo for not making room were always out of line.
That's not a complaint, it's just stating the obvious.
Personally, I'm fine with it.

If we sign Dez to a long term deal, and either restructure or release Carr, how much would we have then?

lol. Ya boys are trading either 1st or 2nd rnd pick for Peterson. Keep dreaming. Vikings aren't releasing him as of now.

Nope don't have to do nothing. Vikings have no leverage and definitely are not going to pay him 13M forcing them to release him eventually.

So basically Stephan Jones was running things 1st half of FA and established salary cap responsibility. Jerry having mini convulsions from not making a splash finally puts his crown back on and declares his way of doing things is way more fun. Stephan back into corner with his pants pulled down. Did I get that right?
