Why are people acting like getting Lee back is a "bonus"?

Ok, that was an injury allowed to heal without surgery in hopes it would not tear again. And it wouldn't have without the proper mechanical forces being applied a certain way. One can make the argument it would not have torn had it been repaired surgically rather than a 'clean up procedure'. Possibly. More than likely there was sufficient forces to tear it either way. That is speculative either way and serves no purpose IMO. The important aspect is that ligament will tear with the proper force applied in the proper manner.

Without concomitant injury to complicate the matter then his knees are partially android now and better than ever.

I don't really understand. He hasn't played a complete season since at least his sophomore year in college, maybe longer. I keep reading in threads and twitter posts how great it will be to see him on the field, like he is some sleeper player. At this point, it's time to call a spade a spade and realize he just isn't going to be on the field late in the season. I hate to write him off, but without some serious depth at the linebacker position, it is hard to just pencil him in and say we're good to go.

Ummm... because he IS A BONUS?

He's missed time with a dislocated wrist, neck strain, and two ACL injuries the last one with a mild meniscal injury. He tore a ACL in college as well although I can't tell is one of those is a total of two or a total of three knee injuries.

So he's missed some time.

I've gone into detail the mechanisms of injury for these and they are plain physics. There is no 'propensity' for these injuries to be weak connective tissue in the very vast human population playing NFL football.

If you wish to say he's snakebit then I'll agree it appears that way.

There is no evidence I know of that suggests he has subpar repairs of his injuries. And he does play at perhaps the worst injury plagued position in the NFL.

Did we have a player not dinged up some last year at LBer? Wilber?? Hitchens??

Lee has missed a lot of time. While there may not be a 'propensity' for weak connective tissue incidence in the NFL or in the general population, there is the possibility that he suffers from some form of it, genetic or otherwise. We can hope that his injury plagued past was an outlier, but I doubt that the FO is counting on him to play a full season.

People shouldn't act like its a "bonus" getting Lee back.....Their thinking should be if we get anything at all out of Lee, it's a bonus.

Nice retort but I'm afraid it is probably not true about a genetic or other cause beyond physics for his injuries. But I agree you can't wish them away. They are out there. But I stand by my statements he is no more or less likely than other players to have another like injury.

But if you call a spade a spade then you'll also say that if he plays we'll get all-pro play at Will for about 11 or 12 games this year (I don't know about if it's to start the year or end it).

If you're not willing to do that then you can't blame fans for being optimistic around you realists.

If none of those games are at the end when it matters the most, those previous games he did play mean nothing.

A little off topic but somewhat related.

Chris Borland of the Niners just retired after 1 year due to health concerns. He had a couple diagnosed concussions and possibly a few more that where missed. This comes on the heels of Patrick Willis retiring due to toe problems.

MLB is rough occupation.

Yes it is. You can fix knees and such. Concussions is another matter.

Might not have been healthy often until now

But at least he hasn't quit on us

Just ask the Niners

This board would be devastated if he retired

I don't expect it but I am hoping. Hell of a player, just need him to stay on the field.

Had Murray played a complete season since college before last year?

I haven't seen any workup of multiple major connective tissue injury statistics in the NCAA + NFL, most players aren't probably good enough to survive more than one in their careers, but I'd imagine that Sean is somewhat of an outlier as far as incidence rates are concerned. There are known genetic connective tissue disorders, as well as structural bio-mechanical deficiencies. My orthopedic surgeon at Penn - Bartolozzi, said that there was a degree of variability in connective tissue strength that seemed to be independent of muscle strength and overall conditioning on the pro football and hockey players that he treated in Philly. He was indirectly answering my question about why I had never broken any limbs or had any major muscle tears despite tearing multiple ligaments and tendons in my ankles knee and shoulders.

Sean may be just really really statistically unlucky, or he might have some physical limitations that will occur with regularity, I'm not saying that you can prove that latter, but I don't think that you can discount it either.

Rent a Bonanza, and we can fix that. :) Or, if you pay for it, I'll rent it and we can fix that.

Maybe because folks wants to be hopeful when it comes to their favorite teams/players.

It's better than always looking for something to complain about IMO.
