Dallas Cowboys: Team drafts Stanford tight end Dalton Schultz | Fort Worth Star-Telegram
(use incognito to get by paywall)

Schultz, who is 6-foot-6, 244 pounds, had 22 catches for 212 yards and three touchdowns for Stanford last season. In three seasons with the Cardinal, Schultz had 55 receptions for 555 yards and five touchdowns.

Schultz doesn't feel his stats do him justice in the passing game.

"I would say I am very underrated in the pass game," said Schultz, who was named to the first-team All-Pac-12 squad in 2017. "I didn’t get a lot of production, but I just wasn't asked to do that stuff in our offense, being very a very run-first and play action over the top offense. I would say I am very underrated and I’m really excited to get out on the field and show everybody that I can be a threat in the man game as well as the middle of the field."

Witten had similar stats when he left Tennessee. In 36 games with the Volunteers, Witten had 68 catches for 797 yards with seven TDs, and the Cowboys used a third-round pick on him.

My least favorite pick of the draft, he is not what we need to keep defenses honest.

Dalton isn't about to replace Witten, although he might manage to make enough blocks to stick around. He'd better hope so, anyway.

Don't be so sure. This guy is tailor-made for Dak AND Zeke. Dak is good on the short and intermediate passing and I think he will quickly become one of Dak's favorite targets. Along with his blocking....

Just go back and watch his 2017 tape. He doesn't make a lot of grabs, but he made some very big/important ones. He has that same unusual knack for getting open that Witten does. I really think people are going to warm up to this pick really quickly. He's also a charismatic hard worker who is going to pancake some backers. Bank it.

I just don't get it. This team plays its best when it's smashing people up front, but people want a WR at TE who's going to get manhandled in the running game. I think more people need to adjust their desires and expectations to what's actually good for this team.

Outside of the Patriots, very few teams win in January with a predominantly pass catching TE and even Gronk CAN block exceptionally when asked to. Ertz MIGHT be the only predominantly receiving TE to win anythinf and he had Celek to do the blocking most of his career.

this is why I loved the pic, hes a an excellent blocker and ive heard he has great hands , just wasn't used much. got damn! we are going to run all over people this year.

only pick I didnt like. I am against using 4th round draft pick to replace back up player (Hanna). That should be reserved for 6th & 7th rounder. Dallas likely needs to use high draft pick next year on TE to replace Witten.

If we had drafted a tight end earlier he likely wouldn't have seen the field much because of blocking deficiencies.

This kid and David Wells on the UDFA list were asked to block 90% of the time, but I think both have very good receiving skills. Not going to stretch the field but we are a run first team and we have 10 WR's.
